Noserider, do your research on Dawgs post if you want. I've never met him, and I can tell you right now, if I was looking for info, he would be one of the first I would look to. He knows his stuff.

Sorry I was away from the computer. Right after i asked dawg if he "was sure" I noticed his 17k plus post. That's generally a pretty good sign who your dealing with. Dawg I'm new here. Clearly you know you stuff and I appreciate the quick reply. One more question if I may. There is some type of sensor in the way of my oil filter wrench. Will the special Harley filter wrench solve this?

Thanks

lol.. You will have that. Welcome to the forum btw. I dont know if you are a "hafta use HD parts" kinda guy or not. But I use K&N filters on mine. They have a nut on top of the case. Put a 3/4" socket on it, twist if off and you are done. They are within a few bucks of the HD filter.

My 04 has a npt tapered thread on the primary. Manual says ms sae plug with 0-ring. Some variation. However if it looks like this you are trying to use wrong o-ring. The o-ring shoud be tight and it goes up into taper in port. The washer face bottoms metal to metal so it stays tight. If it has no groove and looks slightly tapered you use teflon tape on it.

Simple! Look at the plug.

Does it have a shoulder and groove for the o-ring to seat into? Then it gets the o-ring.

Or is the plug threaded it's entire length? In this case, no o-ring.

Yes, there is a cut out in the wrench to get around the sensor. Read up on changing the oil filter without creating a mess before you pull it off as it can be a real mess if you don't take precautions such as rigging a soda bottle, carboard, form a funnel, etc.

Does anyone happen to know the size of the primary drain plug o-ring so we can purchase them elsewhere such a Lowes or Home Depot? I found the oil drian plug o-ring size but cannot find the primary for the 04 models.

Not sure of what type of gasket is on the primary cover but if its at all like the late model ones, reuse the old one to save some money. I have reused them over and over with no leaking.
