Default Primary drain plug help needed

Doing my first service on my new to me 2001 FLHT. I bought the gasket kit for the service. I'm a little confused on the primary drain plug o ring. When I snug the drain plug it just squeezes the o-ring right off the end and it falls on the ground before the drain plug gets tight. If I leave the o-ring out the plug tightens up fine. So how does that o ring stay in place??

01 primary plug should be the tapered one that doesn't use an o-ring

My 06 EG has no 0-ring on the primary plug, but my buddy's 05 Heritage does. Go figure.

Look in a parts catalog for your model bike and see if it shows an "O" ring. Your dealer should have one if you don't.

Check this link. It is a schematic of your model year primary cover. It shows your drain plug without an O-ring.

99-03 uses the tapered plug, 04-06 use the plug with the 11324 o-ring and 07-present use the 11105 o-ring
