Thinking about switching my chain drive to gear. Anyone have any advice or comments on the differences between the two? Any advice and insight would be great. Thanks.
It may not be possible because Harleys spec for crank run out is not close enough to use gear drives. You may get lucky however I doubt it. Gear drive cams need a perfect crank to work. If you are planning a complete re-build then you can pull you crank and buy a balanced and trued crank and then install gear drive cams but the stocker may not work. And in order to find out if your crank will work you have to pull the cam cover, check the crank. If it's within the tighter tolerance then your good to go but if not then it was a waste of money pulling it apart.
If you are checking the crank then you might as well do the cams, but if the cranks no good you gotta use chains, but if you bought the gear drives already you got parts you can't use,but since your in there you might as well finish but you gotta re-order the chain drives. So your paying twice unless you buy both then send the other back once you find out which will work. Pita.
What year is your bike? If its 07 or later and has the later chain drive system then its really as good as gear, the chains dont stretch like the early ones and the tensioners are strong. I wouldnt bother on anything with a stock crank.
02 is a great year (forged crank, Timken bearing) so your crank runout will probably be in spec. You still should check it, but you're probably good to go. I would do gears in an 02 in a heartbeat. Set up your lash with an over or under gear if necessary and you'll be good with noise as well.
You've got the good crank in your 02. Shouldn't be a problem going to gear drive, but i would look at the Screamin Eagle hydraulic upgrade. It comes with a new oil pump as well as the new style tensioners so it's a little cheaper. I've got the S&S 510 gear drives in my 01 and truly am very happy, but spent the extra money on a Fueling Super Pump and cam plate.
