Default Stage 1 options....Dyno or Power Vision?

I'm going to start ordering parts for my 12' Street Glide. With my last bike, I did the stage 1 AC, Big Radius pipes and a dyno tune with the Race Tuner. I'm really wondering if I NEED a dyno tune for a stage 1 set up. I like the looks of that Power Vision tuner and it is close to the price of the Screamin' Eagle tuner.

I'm going to order:

Vance and Hines Dresser Duals, Rinehart 4" mufflers and a Harley Stage 1 AC.

-or-

Vance and Hines Dresser Duals, Jackpot 4" mufflers and a Harley Stage 1 AC.

I just have to decide on the tuning route.....

I would spend the money on the power vision. Really skip the dyno and call Jammie at Fuel Moto and he will set you up with a PV and a map. Then when you ad cams, head work, TB you have the ability to reprogram your set up and Jammie will help you with that too.
I think the dyno is over rated any ways. people spend hundreds for just a couple HP. set it up so that the air/fuel ratio is about 13.4 from idle to 3000 rps and then pour the juice to it and run a 11.8-12.5 to red line and should be some good HP made.

Regardless of your decision to have it dyno tuned, you will need a tuner if you want to go beyond an EPA-compliant H-D reflash of your ECM. The tuning device is what allows you, or anyone else for that matter, to reflash the ECM.

I am intrigued by the Power Vision, but not enough to replace my Super Tuner just yet. Is the PV a piggy-back device (like the Power Commander) or is it only used to upload to the ECM?
Yeah, I know it can be left connected to monitor vitals while riding.

I believe it is a flash tuner....no piggy back.

I usually get a lot of flak on my position on this subject but my position doesn't change. First, let's get the whole dyno tune thing off the table; yeah, I know, there is no substitute for a dyno tune. So, having gotten that out of the way, Stage I upgrades do not NEED one of the more sophisticated fuel management systems like the Power Vision, SERT, SEST, TTS, TMax, Rev Performance ECM, etc. The H-D Stage I ECM flash is a waste of money; it richens the fuel a bit and raises the rev limiter but is designed to use with OEM A/C and exhaust, not aftermarket hardware.

From a cost standpoint, the most cost effective option for a Stage I upgrad is the Dobeck Techlusiion TFI.

The Dobeck unit is a "pot" type fuel management system; think of it as an electronic carburetor. Unlike similar tuners like the V&H or Ness units which are throttle/rpm based, the Dobeck unit is load/speed density based. By comparison, the PCIII is throttle/rpm based and the SERT, SEST, TTS etc. are speed density based. Speed density is the better technology. Easy install, no dyno and the end user "tunes" by adding/pulling fuel. Open the link and check out the Gen 3.5 and Gen 4 systems. This system will also work with mild cams but if the performance upgrades include high lift cams, more compression and/or ported heads, you move into dyno territory.

Any other system is going to cost more but if cost is not a consideration, there are many more sophisticated systems to choose from. The TTS Mastertune is the current state of the art IMHO.

I don't think the PCIII will not work on a 2012.....

I picked up a new Dobeck off of ebay for my '09 Dyna last week for just this reason for $47 shipped.

But I am leaning TTS down the road.

I like the idea of the Power Vision.....its basically a flash tuner....like a SERT. I think that a dyno-tune isn't needed for a basic stage 1, but IF the dealer does it, they'd be more inclined to honor warranty issue should they come up later. They could say..."your mirror fell off....it was the Power Vision tuner....denied!"

You are correct. The Fuel Moto ECM Controller is only available up to '07 for the touring models. Thanks for pointing out the error; I will correct my previous post.
