I can ride with pretty thin gloves as long as they have a decent leather on top to break the wind up. The grips heat from the inside, but keep the entire hand warm for me. In fact I wear standard Hatch HGKSG500-S Shooting gloves until around 40 degrees with the grips on 3.
I wear HD gauntlets with Thinsulate. They work pretty well. At 32 degrees and 60mph the effective temp is 10 degrees.
I am not too sure about heated gloves, jackets, etc - that's the same technology that turns bread into toast.
Heated is the way to go for comfort I got socks, pants, jacket liner and pair of gloves sure its lots wires to get it plug in but once you hooked up it's sooo warm.

Just bought a set of harley heated gloves on ebay for $140.00 , and tonight took my first longish ride with them, and heated pant liner, WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS BEFORE, it is about 40* tonight I was nice ,and toasty.and that was a 200 mile ride.
Below 40, gerbing heated gloves. Above 40-I use the Harley gortex leather winter gloves.
Bought a set of gloves from a hunting store once that were down filled-those were the warmest gloves I have ever had. Only problem was operating the throttle, the palm was filled too, so it acted slippery.
