I think I remember it all. The impact and then seeing the deer in my lap. The sliding on the skid bars down the road and even the dirt hitting my face when the bike left the road. I am only missing two parts. Did I hit the brakes and how much time was there before the first person was beside me telling me that help was on the way.

If you know your momentum and the force provided by lateral impact, you can evaluate your change of trajectory at a given speed. ABS will change the curse of things before the impact but not more.

You remember the deer hitting your lap, you may have had an emergency braking reflex just after the impact. In such case your momentum decreases rapidly but not the energy coming from the animal, so it continues to push you to the ground or you reach the point where the animal falls off your lap by gravity. Where was the animal when you tipped over?

I was hit on the side by a silly moped rider who didn't want to stay in line while a truck was coming towards us. You can't imagine how fast the human brain behaves when you face danger. I chose to squash the moped and we both avoided the truck

I hope you heal well and have the opportunity to eat deer meat soon; it will have a sweet taste of revenge.

At about 45 mph I slid close to 100 ft before hitting the ditch with alot of momentum. The dear was at least 75 ft back up the road from were I came to a stop. I could not have braked much because my forward speed was not slowed at all.

I plan on getting a new bike soon but I have questioned all aspects of the accident so if a similar incident happens I can be as prepared as possible. The idea that I might have jammed the front brake and compounded the accident has really bothered me. I appreciate the honest and thoughtful replies that have helped answer some questions.

45 mph converts to 66 feet per second. I have the impression you almost had a head on collision with the animal, so you can light a candle pal!
