consider that earbuds, will keep out the ambient wind and road noise which combined can often be over 90dB ( certain helmet designs and strap designs make this much worse)

resulting in lower over all noise exposure

Best I ever found for riding has been Etymotic Research 'phones. Their earpiece design takes a little getting used to, but stays in your ears securely, blocks wind noise (serving as hearing protection) and they have great sound too boot.

They also make excellent headsets for a variety of smartphones. I use their hf3 headset on or off the bike.

Ear buds that block out wind noise also block out road noise and other sounds around you. Do you really think that's a great idea??? Don't want to hear that semi merging into your lane from behind. Really??

A lot of good choices for ear buds, however, unless the law has been changed, wearing 2 at a time is still illegal......and from this riders perspective....not smart!

I found some Sony brand ones at Best Buy for under $20. The have foam rubber tips that you squeeze before putting them in your ear then they expand to fit your ear. Very much like safety ear plugs. But I would much rather listen to music through my cycle sounds handlebar system.

I use Westone CR1 custom fit earbuds. I wear them with my FF helmet and can listen to music and talk on the phone and intercom with clarity at speeds well over 100 mph! I have my iPod and phone running through my Autocom communication system.

In bluetooth for half helmet I enjoy a Motorola HD S10 "behind the neck" set that is outstanding. Big improvement over the previous model S9. Long battery life, very water resistant, and good phone quality under 50MPH or so. My Galaxy 2 smartphone is loaded with music, Pandora, XM, and of course Nav by Google Earth on the 4.3" screen. Easy controls on the side. This setup works for me...

Prior to my full bagger days, I used to use Brookstone noise-isolating headphones. THey have a little plug that goes into your ear with different size plugs. They stayed in my ears, sealed out the wind noise and were comfortable. There are toms of plugs just like those. Many mentioned above.

I'm not sure what you think you're really hearing above say about 45mph. The wind noise blocks out about anything lower then a large diesel pickup anyways. I would hope riders would be paying enough attention to notice something the size of a semi in their rear view mirrors. There's not much that a riders hearing would tell them about road hazards that their eyeballs shouldn't have already told them. In areas where headphones are illegal riders should be working to repeal those laws since many new cars are so sound insulated that the drivers can't hear anything less then a police siren and therefore there is no reason that riders should be further restricted.
