Default Recall Why go ?

So if you do not bring your bike in for the Recalled switch , or any recall for that matter, what you think will happen , god forbid you have an insuarance claim.

Meaning: Harley has had at least 3 recalls on 2006 -2012 bikes

Ya crash, and the insurance adjuster notices your bike still has
3 recalls outstanding on the bike that you crashed, lets say 24
months has passed it's clear you choose not to have the re-call
done.

Then the insuarnce adjuster notices that you hand made a "heat sheild on the very part that has a recall and your running the old bad part....

Good question! If the part wasn't determined to be the cause of the accident I'm sure your fine. Take me for example. I haven't received my official notice yet for the brake light switch. If it fails and causes an accident I'm sure I'd still be covered anyway.

Lets hope that doesn't happen

insurance and aftermarket parts and owner modifications are tricky:

my wife hit a Guy in a raised 4 runner in her Volvo ( her fault).

because his truck was lifted, the volvo got underneath and started him rolling down the highway

the Guy was OK, the 4 runner was totalled

the insurance denied his claim because his mods contributed to the seriousness of the damage

accident investigators described the damages and result of the volvo vs stock 4 runner.

...and many of his suspension parts were "off road" and broke/bent etc where the stock parts may not have

OK, so we felt bad about that--- then the accident investigators showed us the invoices from his truck work with showed over and over warnings about not for use on public roads

if his 4 runner were stock:

the bumpers would have absorbed impact

the volvo would not have been able to get under his truck

his big ol' tires climbed on top of the volvo's hood and his high center of gravity started him rolling

suspension parts broke

brakes were judged to be undersized for the wheels

Well in mt case, I needed two of the three recalls. One improved my ABS performance a lot, and the other is this faulty brake switch that has been kicking my cruise off on hot days. The third was the tank recall that I had fixed when I replaced my tires.

Depends on your adjuster - some are not very thorough and may never know. Then again you could be screwed.

Why not take it in for the recall? Most of these campaigns take about 1/2 hour to do which is enough time to flirt with the girls at the dealership and look at a couple bikes.

Because those 30 minutes to repair my bike would be 30 minutes of anxiety for me while I watched the tech molest my bike. I'd have no time to flirt or look at other bikes.

I know a lot of you who routinely have your stuff worked on by others may not understand this, but its real.

I'd prefer if my bike was never touched by anyone... Period. It's either exactly as it was from the factory in every respect, or if not, the change or modification or repair is familiar to me because I did it.

Ok, I do most of the routine maintenance with documentation...but if I get a recall I have it taken care of...for my peace of mind and if I ever sell the bike I can assure the new buyer that all recalls that I'm aware of have been completed by HD service.....
