My wife informed me today that my father-in-law's friend is looking to sell his '05 ultra classic peace officer, 18000 miles, for $11000. I've been looking at RKs, but this seems like a great deal and I like the ultra. Thoughts?

That is a great deal. Jump on it. I bought an Ultra and I love it. I didnt think I would use the cruise or stereo but I do. It is nice having all the storage too. Just get the bike checked out by a mechanic or at least get service records. If in good shape definitely worth it.
So if I have a mechanic check it out, what should I emphasize he looks for? Cam tensioner, oil consumption from leaking valves... ? I'm fairly confident the guy took this thing to the dealer for all service.
I know I would be taking a step "down" to the 88/5 speed from the 96/6 speed, but I've have the itch for a touring bike for 6 months and this seems like a good opportunity to scratch it

BS. Unless you run a lot over 80. The 88/5speed is fine. My bike, with Stage One upgrade runs 2800rpm at 65 mph,
3200rpm at 75 mph. Right in the sweet spot. The only reason I would want a newer bike is for ABS. I'm sure there are other nice things about newer bikes, but you won't miss them if you never tried them. Can't lose what you never had!
That's a fair price in this economy and you should be able to find out how it was taken care of. If you like the way it looks and rides, buy it and enjoy!
