Has anyone installed this kit themselves and did you have to buy Harley's spring compression tool to do the job? I am trying to figure out a way to get the spring compressed without the tool. I have rebuilt standard forks, installed lowering kits, installed a set of intiminators and did not need the special tools Harley seems to think are must haves but, it seems I may have to for this. Any Ideas?
I decided I might as well get a set of chromed lowers while I was at it and figured I would just go ahead and bring the kit in and have it installed at the dealership. Dropped the kit off, purchased a set of chrome lowers and was told it would be done by the end of the day. End of the I show up and was informed that they could not install the kit because they did not have the compression tool, now I have to wait till they get the tool.
As luck would have it mine was completed yesterday sitting at the shop with new Ohlins and the prem fork kit, banged my knee on a rock (torn tendon) and can't ride, in fact will probably need surgical repair. The spring compressor is why I didn't attempt it myself.
I am going to start mine when the tools I ordered come. Hopefully this coming week...
Thank You for the info and the link, as of now the dealership has my new chromed lowers and the kit, the dealerships service department is closed till Tuesday, said one way or another they would get it done for me. The forks are for the ultra and it is apart anyhow waiting on the inner fairing to get back from the paint shop and a set of WO1 577 bars that due to arrive on Monday. DPete sorry to hear about your knee, that has gotta suck. When I ordered the kit I had no idea I would need to have that compression tool, nine out of ten times they say I need a special tool I find out that I can do the job without it. maybe if the dealership can't get it done I will figure out a way to fabricate something that will do the job.

How to use the spring compressor. There are other tools that you cam make for this job. You can install Ohlins piston & shim (Valve) them to your tastes. There is no way that you can put in externally adjustable spring pre-load, rebound or compression but new pistons do have removable rings that is part of the rebuild process.

Thanks for the video's Howard. Since I have already purchased HD's double cartridge kit along with the chrome lowers I just may rebuild the old set using the Ohlins piston & shim
