I just ordered VH dresser duals with hi output exhaust for my 2012 street glide. Going with stage 1 kit. My question is what will I gain or lose in hp. Also was wondering will I need to purchase heat shields have heard different responses about the heat.

you should get heat shields to cover up the headers, and also to keep your clothing etc. getting burned by exhaust pipes ( think rain suit).
conventional wisdom the past 25 years is that a "stage 1" will gain 7 to 10 horsepower by removing the stock equipment restrictions to flow in and out of the motor. This is the least expensive and most reliable power gain you will see on a Harley
