Default Cam chain Tensioner Inspection

Can I see the tensioners by removing the small round cover or do I have to remove the whole side plate? If so, do I have to completely remove the exhuast pipes? 2001 FLHTC

You'll have to remove the entire side plate along with the front head pipe

You have to at least seriously loosen the exhaust and remove the front floorboard. The rear floorboard bracket will swing out of the way. Then remove the cam chest cover. ( Do it slowly so you don't damage the gasket.)

The front tensioner is obvious. The one in the back is more difficult to inspect. Get a dental mirror and a strong flashlight to help you see.
