Default Cam chest blues

Well its cold and raining here in beautiful northern Michigan so I decided to have a quick look at the cam drive, which is all stock, and found more plastic and aluminum than makes me comfy so I guess I will order tools from George's and get to disassembling My plans are to pull the push rods out after removing the rocker arms. I will try and photo document as well as I can.

Sorry for the crappy pic, but you can almost make out the pile of rubble under the tensioner.

I pulled the cover when I got the bike about 4K miles ago and looked it over with a good flashlight and dental mirrors and was satisfied with their condition. As far as I can tell these are original to the bike the PO claimed he never had them replaced. I will only replace what is needed, I have no plans of upgradeing cams or the drive system.

I'd say you did great for an 01 with over 60k miles.

I was one of the "lucky" ones too. Checking every 10,000 miles all the way through 70,000 and the tensioners still looked decent. At just over 80,000 the rear was found in 2 pieces, still stuck under the spring. When they finally go, they go quick.

( Don't forget to pull the umbrella cover bolts before removing the rockers, ( if memory serves,))

If you're going to go that far you might as well upgrade to the hydraulic tensioners and I'd replace the inner cam bearings too.

Makes me wonder about my 1999. I got almost the same mileage. Was it making any strange noises? or any thing tip you off to check them again?

Speaking for mine, Nope, not a sound. Just part of the regular every 10,000 mile check that I'd been doing since 50,000 miles.

No noise, no problems, it was just a crappy day for riding and I decided to take a quick look. This is not a case of impending doom and I think I could button it up and keep on truck'in but riding season is over here, they already salted once, so I am going to make good my down time. I have a factory service manual and one good thing about being an A&P is they beat into your head " read and understand" so I shouldn't get into to much trouble. I think if I was paying for labor I would invest in an upgraded cam drive system, be it gear or hydralic, but being the cheap skate that I am I won't. Besides this is my "perfect" bike, I bought one just like it new and have kicked myself in the *** more than once for getting drunk and totaling it out. I feel blessed to still be able to ride at all and this scooter is the icing on the cake. Taking care of it mechanically is just one aspect of all the things I love about it so opening up the chest every once in a while is fun for me.

A lot of people might not know what an A&P is around here, but I do. Being an A&P myself, I understand your position. Good Luck and there are plenty people here willing to lend you their opinions and information should you have a question.

For those who may not know, an A&P is an Aircraft Mechanic. I am currently working along the gulf coast doing helicopters.
