Default Cam install links?

I've read some cam install writeups, and seen the J&P video. All of these used the cutting out the pushrods procedure. I'm removing my rocker boxes and reusing my pushrods. So, does anyone have any good cam articles when your "going in through the top"?
Yes, I do have a service manual. Thanks again!

Do you have a specific question that the manual doesn't cover?

There's really nothing tricky about pulling the rocker box covers. Some guys will prop up the gas tank to avoid pulling it, but it's easier in the long run to just get it off the bike and out of the way.

You've collected all the specialized tools you will need? (Micrometers to measure runout, bearing removal tool, etc.) Are you changing the cam plate? Installing chain or gear drive cams?

With the gas tank off the bike, the right side of the rocker box covers are completely accessable, and you can use a 3/16 allen wrench to remove the bolts.

But over on the left side, the frame is in the way

You will either have to cut down an allen wrench (cheap tool), or buy a close access wrench, such as the SE upper rocker box wrench

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but can you use a regular box end type wrench on those bolts from the outside rather than Allen in the center? I think I remember my indy telling me a 7/16 wrench works just fine.

I just pulled mine last nite. Used a box wrench on all the bolts. You can check out my thread for pics.

I bought the bearing tool, ordered the SE rocker box wrenches, waiting on the cams and have the Fuel moto install package. Just wondering if any of the procedure was different if you go in through the top? I guess its all the same. Just remove the rocker boxes so you can pull the pushrods. Remove the pushrod covers so you can hold the lifters up?

I was just looking on eBay for rocker box wrenches and saw one that fits the Allen head and also has a 3/8 cutout in the handle for using with a torque wrench. Motion pro, I believe. Anyone used one like that? How does that affect your torque reading? Is it unaffected if your torque wrench is at a right angle to the other wrench? Thought I read that somewhere.

Atrain68 did a good cam-install write-up, but I don't recall if he reused his stock pushrods or not. No matter, as it is a straightforward procedure that you can reference in your service manual, and other than pulling the pushrods instead of cutting them the procedure is the same.

Also, watch the JP Cycles video, although I recall that they cut the pushrods for that tutorial.

I'm one of those who didn't remove the tank and didn't find that it was in the way at all after jacking it up an inch or so. The frame gets in the way regardless, and that is what makes the left rocker-cover bolts such a pain to access, not the tank. I used this procedure for my '07 (5-gal. tank) and a friend's '09 (6-gal.) and the results were the same. The '08 and later do not have crossover hoses, and those tanks are much easier to remove.

Remove the pushrod covers so you can hold the lifters up?
I guess you mean the pushrod tubes, which will come off regardless. The lifters must be held up in some way, either with a magnet (e.g. HD #93979-10) or clips (Office Depot #308-957 Large [2"] Binder Clips, package of 12). With the clips, you must grind or file the tips to a sharp point so they will fit under the lifter clips. Otherwise they will not hold well.

As for the special wrenches for the rocker covers, if you did a lot of cam jobs I would want one around--but for just occasional use I wouldn't bother. It might take a bit longer using a standard box-end or open-end wrench, but IMO not enough to justify buying a special tool. The same goes for the two special tools (cam-alignment and gear-locking tools) mentioned in the service manual, as they only make the job a little easier. The former isn't necessary at all and the latter can be bypassed by simply holding the rear-brake lever while loosening or re-torquing the bolts.
