Default I did it.

It is a big job and can be done. Start by getting the service manual and part catalog. If you want the H/K get 2006. If the Radio Sound Radio, at least 1998. It is the first year that had the CB/Intercom inside the radio. The CD radio is a Plug-N-Play upgrade from the cassette.

I installed the the newer Radio Sound CD radio on my 1989 Ultra. What I did first was to get the Part Catalog for the first year of the radio I wanted. This way I could find the parts that were still the same, or the first year they were used. This way I could find what was needed to change.

Next I bought the service manual to see what was required to install the parts. The first thing I know you will need to change is the hand controls and housing. The new switches will not fit inside the older housings. If you want the Ultra stuff, you will also need the Ultra Harness (separate from the main harness) that ran out of the fairing.
If you can read schematics and handle wiring, you can save money by rewiring the main harness to accept the newer radios. If not, be ready to change the Main harness. No mater what, you will need to change the Interconnect harness inside the fairing. The specialty plugs and wiring for inside the fairing is easier using that harness.

Like I said, it can be done, but it is a lot of work. And this will make the bike a specialty, One of a Kind, bike. Hard to dell, if you try.
Good luck.
