No its not normal, its not intended to function that way. What you have is a faulty electrical component, which is also not uncommon in any application.
Based on the properties of a Big Crank Battery, 26 Ah, and 2.2 amps draw of the fans, and the calculator link below, theoretically it will take 4.92 hours to drain a battery
http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/sports-imp...drainCalc.html
I don't know how accurate this calculator is, I don't have real world results of how long the fans have to run before the bike wont start, even if I did have results they would not reasonably represent all bikes due to the varied health conditions of charging systems.
I've had reports of the original fans, 1.6 amp total draw, being left on during a 12 hour work shift and the bike still started, and I've had reports of the new fans, 2.2 amps total draw, being left on for 4 hours and the bike wouldn't start.
I can't guarantee that a thermal switch will never fail, I can guarantee I will replace it if it does fail.
If somebody wants a bulletproof no fail starting system I would suggest a battery buddy type device that cuts all draw on the battery before it gets too low to start, or add a time relay to the FCS circuit.
Bottom line a new thermal switch will probably take care of your problem. Again I don't have a database to cross reference forum screen names with real names so contact me via email with your current shipping info and I'll send you one.

Default fans

I've had the fans installed since last summer but I did not install the switch just so I could control when they go on and off. Common sense pretty dictates for me when to turn them on. Traffic jam ahead? On go the fans. They work fantastic! If there was only one small complaint it would be riding over a rough road causes them to bang the cylinder heads sometimes because of the rubber mount but it's not a big concern. I'm thinking of ordering stiffer isolators from McMaster Carr and experiment. I'd space them out but there is not a lot of thread left on the rubber isolator to make me feel comfortable. Maybe later this summer I'll do the switch to see how often they would cycle on and off.

Thanks for an excellent product. I HIGHLY recommend these fans and I have no ties or affiliation to the company at all.

Contact Jason on this issue Blueglide88, he can probably help you out or tell you which one to buy from MC.

Don't want you to think that I am upset or anything, hell I thought maybe I could have done something wrong. I have already posted a positive experience on the fans in the Dyna area, the performance of the fans to control my CHT has been amazing. Just thought I would post here to be sure I have not missed anything before contacting you. Email sent.

This is the first time in years that I didn't shut the motor off while stopped in Laconia Bike Week traffic. Those of you that have experienced this know that everyone shuts their bikes off and just coasts down the hills leading to the Weirs. My engine temps never got over 262*.

Zall good, you didn't do anything wrong, I just tried to be thorough in the response, 'cause I'm sure others are reading with interest.
