I just traded my 05 1200 sportster in on a 07 roadking. The king has vance and hines oval slip on mufflers and a free flowing air cleaner put on by the previous owner who traded for an UC. Looking at the head pipe not covered by the heat shields I can see what looks like heat effects on it. There is a lot of blue, purple, and redish orange on the pipe, especially where the cross over pipe joins the right side pipe to go over the engine to the left side pipe. Does this mean it's running too lean? I can tweek a carb but I dont know how to mess with EFI. I havn't noticed decel popping or anything like that, just wondering about the colors on the pipes.
If it runs fine with no decel pop or running overly hot then it should be fine. Have you checked the condition of your spark plugs. Wbat is your fuel milage?
These bikes run lean, and hot! One of the reason they have chrome heat shields on them now instead of just chrome pipes. Pull the heat shields off any bike with more than a couple thousand miles on it, and I'll bet they look like you're describing.
The pipes on my '08 looked like a polished metal "pride parade" flag.
If you ever happen to take them off and you're feeling like an extra hour of work, hit 'em with ScotchBrite pads and lay on a few coats of --- Uh... What is it, UHT? It's a ceramic, high-temp paint (I used silver on my '11's pipes) that allegedly kicks a bit more heat out of the back. Can't tell you if that part is actually true, as I hit 'em after I had a cat-ectomy. I just wanted to make sure there was something over that new weld to avoid the chance of rust developing down the road. But I have to say, it actually looks pretty sweet too (what little you can see)... No discoloration at all over the past year.
And some pretty freaking hot rides this year, lemme tell ya.
