Default Mileage on Speedometer

Where is mileage kept on newer Harleys ? In the speedometer head unit or computor. Used to be when you ordered a speedo from dealer the Manufactor set mileage.. Is it the same now ??

I had mine replaced after a wreck last year and they told me they had to have the speedometer set at the factory.

There are new hd speedos that read the mileage from the ecu. I just put one in and it was very easy.

No.... only for speedos that have that feature built in. The computer does contain a "copy" of the miles.... but does not push it to a new speedo, unless the speedo has that feature....... and you can only do it once, then the speedo locks the miles.

I helped a fellow forum member put in a new speedometer on his '12 Road King Classic; it came with a special cable that plugged into the data port to transfer the miles. Worked like a charm.
