I went from an 06 Road King to an 06 Ultra...the 07 & 08s were out and all I heard on here was all about the heat from the 96ers and 6th grear was useless until 70 or 80 mph...so I went with the 06 again..for me if I went for an 09-12 I would go allday for an 09...no cat and 6th gear was fixed so I hear tell...Ultra allday over the Steet Glide...headsets and lowers are a plus when touring...I lost my saddlebag guards and the tourpac is removeable for that stripped down look...in the summer the lowers come off..
Might need to get a different seat with better passenger pad....my wife says the stock on sucks. But considering the options and easy of swapping out if you don't like the way a comfy seat looks on a daily basis, that's a tiny thing to deal with.
I'd get an '09 and up but that's what I have. If I had an older bike and was as happy as I am with this one I'm sure I would be saying to get that. I do think the 6 gallon tank is a big plus. I like TBW and ABS. I like the way the bike handles and rides. I think if you're going to leave the motor alone or just make minor mods I'd try to find a 103. Once you let it breath you'll notice quite a bit of difference. If you plan to go to a 107 or more I'd save my $ and get a 96. The point about the price of the fat back tire is valid. It is quite a bit more expensive. I got sticker shock the first time I had to replace the tire on my custom wheel. $250 installed, wheel off the bike! Metz is proud of that 200 50zr 17.
ABS = priceles - especially if your Mrs. is on the back a lot of the time.
Went from a old glide with a skinny rear tire that easily got slippery in a fast stop; that combined with a wobbly frame in the turns made for some interesting rides at times.
Rent a new one and take it out for a long, fast ride; if your like most, you will be looking for an 09 and up after the ride...
Regardless of the year you get - there is no single year that they ever made a glide that was 100% perfect with zero design or mfg. issues. Every year has it's tradeoffs and/or known little gremlins.
I can only speak about my ride and the experience that I have had since I brought her home in May 09 and have rode almost every day, the only problem I have had was a rear break switch failure.
I have been well pleased with my 1st harley bagger of which I ride 2 up probably 40% of my riding time. I am satisfied with power and comfort with the add ons that I have put on her.
Awesome info guys. I should add my 06 Softail is a 200mm rear tire and doesnt wear very good at ALL!! Is this the same tire thats on the FLHX?? I got 6K out of my first one. My 06 is carb'd.....last year for that. I ordered it that way so going to another carb would not scare me. I had big plans to hop the motor up on this one and never did. I have a feeling thats the same way it would be with the new bike.
What does the 120R motor come on? Screaming Eagle only? That would be awesome but a quick look on eBay said around $28K......F-that.
I do know I want a LOW MILE bike so for the most part that is gonna rule out anything very old. But again I have tried to sell my FXST several times and it didnt even get a bite. Might have to trade it in on a new one.....get screwed by the dealer but save on some taxes and one stop shop. Ride there and ride back, but on the new one.
Seems to me the bikes a couple years old are bringing $18K or so, new is not much more.
And I just got off the phone with my bank and they said yeah go ahead......hows 4.675% interest sound? DAMMIT!!
My wife and I have been on one trip on the FXST and hated it. At least I did. She thought it was ok but that was her first bike trip of any distance. I think the FLHX would make them MUCH more enjoyable and we would ride alot more. More room, more comfy, smoother, windshield, stereo....whats not to like?
Yup, I came from an FXDF, the lil woman loved that, then last summer after I paid the Dyna off I upgraded to the 2011 103 FLHX. Gotta beat her with a stick whenever I head out lol.. In truth I love it as well. Great looks, upgraded the stereo so I can hear it now, cams and exhaust etc reeeaalllyyy woke it up.
Handles very well for a bike it's size/weight...
So far have 10,000 trouble free km's on it, rear tire still showing 50-60% tread life, I'm sure I'll get 10,000 miles easy..
