Default Need Stereo Guru Opinions

Doing an upgrade this spring on my 103 Limited Ultra. I want 6 speakers --- fairing, lowers, and rear pods. Found a guy who does alot of bikes, and he likes JL Audio. He recommended JL all the way around, and a JL amp in the tourpak. I don't know much about them. Is JL a top-of-the-line setup? I was ready to put Focals in, but he talked me out of it. Just wanna make sure JL's one of the best. I've had Hogtunes & ARC, and wasn't real impressed. I now have Hertz 6.5s in the fairing, and I like them, but he thought I should do JL everything. What do you think? Thanks.

focals are sweet if you got the coin. JL audio is very high quility. I would recommend them.

JL is one of the brand name systems you could go with. But like the oil argument everyone has their own preference. Most likely his reason for doing everything JL because all the components are compatible and would give you the best sound verse mix and matching different brands. I've heard JL systems and have been very impressed, but just my opinion. One thing to keep in mind about the speakers you are not just looking at watts you also need to look at the sensitivity levels as well. While its great they might be able to handle a lot of power if the sensitivity is less than 90dB the clarity is not going to be a great. That is the part most people don't understand about selecting speakers. Just my two cents.... Good luck in whatever decision you make.

I could never imagine the JL amp to be any better than the Alpine PDX series.

Could never imagine that JL would be an improvement over Focal either.

Not saying they would be worse,...................

However,...sound is subjective !

I've got an all JL system with an Alpine head unit. I think it sounds pretty good. But to really get the most out of anything you do, you need to replace that stock HK.

THAT'S a good answer. You're right --- he wanted JL all the way around because they'd be more compatible with each other, rather than putting my Hertz in there somewhere. In my "research", I've learned about sensitivity, but can't find it anywhere for JL speakers. I heard it might be only 89. Do you know?

I want to still use all the "thumb" controls just the way they are now --- volume up or down, fade, plug in ipod, etc. Does that Alpine do what that HK is doing now?

It's NOT the headunit that allows you to retain the handcontrols. It's an adapter that interprets those commands and sends them via a headphone like plug to your aftermarket head unit.

Biketronics sells an awesome kit that is pricey although it's simple and plug and play!

Ask him which JL speakers he is installing. Go to their website and pull up that speaker and look at the technical data for it. It will tell you the watts and sensitivity for that particular speaker. What you will find a lot of times there is a trade off between the two. Kind of like with cams either torque or power. As far as the handle bar controls you can either get with Biketronics or Hawg Wired. Both sell the module to allow you to continue to use the hand controls. They are a little expensive.
