why?

harleygoodies has a great product at a good price, and I don't see anywhere in the DIY section that covers the Softail

additionally, my SG used 3 spacers and the funky bracket extender that connects to the bolts on the kickstand

and one last point, while you may have that aluminum bar stock and a drill press, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say most folks, won't miss the $30-40 and a finished product arriving in 2-3 days in the mail with directions, a complete tool list and 20-25 mins of their life to get it done

yeah a few bucks in raw materials, how much was your time worth?, I think I will stick to supporting the vendors on this forum especially when its a few bucks

I don't know about Softails, I put this in "Touring Models". To each their own, I'm sure some people on this site have the ability, resources and ambition to do things on their own, I was just giving those members a alternative that I did.
Maybe its a snowy or rainy Saturday, the kids are playing video games and you want to do something to your bike and still take your family out to eat. Every little bit helps.
