I have seen a bunch of posts on this topic as I have been wanting to do something as well. From what I have read it is about 30 minutes to take it off or put it on without the kit. So I am going to save the cash for something else. I will be pulling mine off sometime this week.

Fwiw it takes about 20 seconds and no tools with the detachable kit. Well worth it imo if you think you'll be wanting to remove/install the TP frequently.

The detach kit is the way to go. On or off in under 30 seconds. But I'm trying to understand - why does it cost so much for your bike? Mine all total, was like $300 from Chicago HD.
Good question. I will get specific pricing this week. Thanks.

That quick release feature works just as well for the crooks too. Add to the "bill of goods" the locking cam retainer, about $50.

The quick release system seems rattle prone, some suggest rotating the mount pins once in a while, but the rattles come back quickly. When not touring, the tour pack is the handiest way to secure a helmet or helmets during those short stops. Much handier than the locking helmet hooks. Especially since I added a radio and mounted the antenna on the TP, I remove it very rarely. I believe the bolted on unit would be little added inconvenience for the occasional removal, it would be more secure with no added locking gizmos, and be practically rattle free.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I had the quick detach worked into the deal on my 2012 Limited. Bike was purchased too late to ride, so winter hibernation is necessary. Here's my question. Where does the pigtail go when you remove the Pak?

With the Ultra you have the added effort of dealing with the electrical hook-up if it has lights on it. Otherwise it's a quick and easy proceedure to get it on or off. I have a RK, so no wires. I can swap it on and off in one minute.

I prefer the look of the bike without the TP for sure, but it's very handy and useful, especially if the bike is your primary transportation. Mine hauls groceries, etc.

My TP is on about half the year (in winter it's on a lot - cuz of winter jackets and cold weather gear). In summer it's a Corbin solo and stripped down with no TP unless on a road trip.

NIce. Thanks for the photo. I just bought a '12 SG seat as a take off ( $100), and it looks good in your photo. Not the most comfy, but not too bad either. Good looking saddle. Appreciate it.

I put the King TourPac with a removable mount on my Road King and don't even take it off.
