Mine, spends most of its life without it. I only put it on for long trips. Love how easily it comes on and off. Be aware that it doesn't come with the internal antennas so you will have antenna connections added between the fender and the side bags that you will be able to see with the tour pack installed and the kit relocates the passenger intercom plug so if you have that you will have the ring that it plugs into still on the tour pack seat except it will be empty. Also the kit doesn't come with plugs for the wiring harness when the tour pack is removed, this bothered me because those connectors are "hot" with the tour pack is removed. You may also want to consider a theft deterrent device like a "Brukus" or something for when it is installed because it comes off dangerously fast. You will probably want to consider a different seat for when its off, the stock seat is huge looking without the tour pack installed. That's about all I can think of right now that I didn't know about when I bought mine.

I bought the parts last summer and it cost $350 and did it myself. It was a easy job, took me a few hours cause I am slow. Dealer wanted another few hundred to do the labor,,,no way, its too easy.

I bought a used seat like in some pictures posted here for $100. So, my total cost was $450. Its a much more streamlined look although the stock ultra seat is more comfortable after one hour or more riding.

To me the bike handles like a different machine, so much so that I never put the pack back on, but I do miss it for storage for the helmet or picking up something at the store.

I just took the TP off of my 2012 Electra Glide and carried it up two flights of stairs to the storage area. It definitively weighs at least 40 lbs without cinder blocks, if onlly 10 lbs I would not have taken it off.

I just removed mine about a month ago. I like the idea of having it off most of the time, but being able to throw it on for a road trip. If you just pull it off without the kit, it looks kind of tacky. Thats because the kit comes with new chrome fender support covers. The ones that are currently on there has several cut outs in them where the chrome tour pak supports pass through. Just my .2

I purchased a detachable kit and tour pak for my '08 Road King when I bought it new. I usually leave mine off because I like the look and the slightly better mileage. Truth be told, I also got it because the OL wanted one for overnight trips. They aren't tough to take off at all. Just do it.

I have an earlier bike and the tourpak is held on with 4 bolts. I cut the wiring and installed a qd multi-pin plug, so it takes just a few minutes to remove or refit. Plain fact is I don't do that often, but it is a useful feature. The qd plug was expensive (military style) but dirt cheap compared with a Harley qr kit!

I have the detach kit also and love it, unless my wife is on the back my tourpak sits in the garage. The bike does ride better without it especially in a hard wind, plus I like the looks of my bike without it. I also have a detachable sissybar for the short trips with my wife. I can still fit enough in the sidebags that I dont really miss it to much

I started with no TP at all, so my situation is a bit different. I chose the quick-release for the chopped TP and wouldn't have it any other way, even if I had started with a bike that had a fixed-mount TP installed from the factory. I mount the TP mostly for trips and rarely use it locally except to go grocery shopping, and even that is uncommon. Even on trips I will remove it and keep it in the motel room if we are doing "day rides" from a fixed departure point every day. For me, having the extra weight and higher center of gravity isn't worth having it installed at all times, as the bike handles much better without it.

As for cost, I don't know where the dealer arrives at an $800 price tag, as the even if labor is involved. The docking kit and rack are the only two items you should need and on current bikes the docking kit is a simple install, I'm told, so I doubt if labor should be a big chunk of that quote.
