Default Rear Pulleys....Anyone Know?

I am hoping that someone will know the answer to this question. I want to make a change to the gearing on my bike, a 2003 Ultra. I would like to use a 68 tooth rear pulley off a 2004 Sporty. Will it work??

I know the XL pulley lives on the opposite side but what the heck....it won't know the difference! Any thoughts???? I just want to make a two tooth change to lower rpm's at cruise on my out-dated five speed. If this doesn't work I will go with a 66 tooth from an 07 but think that might be too high.

Maybe when this shows up during the daytime you will get some answers. I think I have read before about Sportster rear pulleys working on Touring, but don't know for sure.

If you want quick replies and a multi page thread, talk about paint colors, seats, wheels or "hey look at my new bike I bought when I went in to the dealer to buy sunglasses!!"

Spot on! I know HD makes a lot of things that fit a lot of bikes so I am thinking the rear pulley might work. I can deal with a little "fitment" if need be. Just looking to lower my rpm's in fifth. I can do the 66 tooth from an 07 with a belt change but concerned it might be too high. Thinking if I tried the Sporty and the same width belt I have now I could see if it makes enough difference without having to pull the inner primary and buy the narrow belt. Hope your right about getting more replies tomorrow. If not I will have to start a new thread about the time I went into the dealer to buy some t-shirts and.......... ;-)

Somebody who knows parts will hopefully chime in today, my personal thought is that the Sporty pulley is thinner and has a thinner belt, I may be wrong, but if I'm right, would the belt be strong enough.

Chiming in!

Your bike runs the wider 1 1/2" Kevlar belt ( 97 - 03,) and Harley went to stronger, narrower Carbon Fiber belts in '04.

Logically, the pulleys got narrower too.

Change your front sprocket by one tooth 'up' instead.

I know from experience that the gearing on the 07-08 kinda sucks. 1st was too high to pull out loaded without a lot of clutch slipping and 6th was useless unless on the level over 65. I went with a 68t rear pulley from an export sportster with IDS. Just enough difference to make the gearing like the 09. Well worth the money I spent. Unless your 5spd 1st ratio is different from the 07 you probably won't like the 66t from the 07.

Did the 1" belt/pulleys start in the 07 model year? If need be I could change belts but hoping to be able to try this first and see how it works. Also changing to a narrow belt I can run a 150 or 160 tire on the rear.

I replied on pulleys the last time you posted this question.

you can change your belt to narrower, but the labor is expensive...but if you do, that's the time to check the swingarm bushings

chain is the way to go for gearing flexibility and rear tire clearance if you want to try that
