Trip was beautiful and fun, Ken. Until we got to Sturgis. There is so many people there you can't even move without bumping into somebody. The rally is pretty enjoyable with like 350,000 attendance. This year is just nuts and way too many bikes and people to have a good time. Doesn't matter what you want to do, it's wait......and wait some more.......

So we headed home. We'll take another run out there in a couple weeks after things die down and we can enjoy it.

Just one day. We got there a day late and lost our reservation at our campground. There was no place to stay unless you want to pitch a tent in the median on the freeway or something.

it's funny that this came up, i've had a whining noise too and was thinking it was the inner primary bearing. i took the speedo/ tach out today and greased the speedo up some and lubed the cable. it's raining now but i'll see if the whine goes away later. on a side note i lost the screw that holds the trip meter reset ****, it fell on the floor and i couldn't find it. it's a m2x 8 long. $.27 at the ace hardware store. 85 flhtc.

Where does that little screw go? Our bike has a cable from the **** that bends 90 degrees and goes on the shaft on the side of the speedo with a sleeve on the end of the cable. There's a tiny hairpin that goes thru a hole in the sleeve and shaft.

After I figured out what was wrong with the speedo on our bike it could've been fixed by simply pulling out the headlight, remove the speedo cable from the back of the speedo head, then pack the speedo shaft with grease, working thru the headlight hole. There was nothing wrong with it that required removal of the speedo head. Of course, I didn't know that until I took it all apart in the parking lot of a NAPA parts store

But on the upside, if you have a problem with your bike on the road, working on it in the parking lot of a NAPA is pretty handy. If you find you need a tool you don't have along, you can just run inside and buy it

the 85 has a plastic **** about 2" long that gets screwed to the trip meter shaft. the **** is hollow and you need to have a small pocket screwdriver to get to the screw. it's about an inch and a half to where the head of the screw is.

That's interesting. I wonder if the '84 has a different speedo head then? The shaft comes out the side of the speedo head on the '89. I think it does on the '86 too because the **** is the same on the bike I just bought.

i have 2 spare speedo heads i picked up at swap meets. one is good(i think) and the other is just for parts. i paid $4 for one the other i don't remember what i paid for it. any time i see parts for early evo's, no mater what they are, i buy them. i got a brand new ignition switch for $5 once. they're worth a couple hundred $.
