Default Waterproofing after market fairing...

Hey Guys,

I just installed a new stereo with an ejectable GPS ( Jensen VM9414) in my Dragonfly fairing. Now I can not fully close the door on the marine housing because the new stereo sticks out a little to far. I am looking for a new housing, but I haven't found anything yet. My backup plan right now is to find a small cover just for the fairing incase it starts raining while the bike is parked. Any thoughts?

Also any recommendations on protecting the inside of fairing if water does come in? Dragonfly's waterproofing was using duct tape on the top of the stereo. I also want to protect the amp I just installed.

Thanks for your advise!

Here are a couple of pics of how my woodys fairing is protected from water on the inside. The plastic piece comes with the fairing then I used epoxy and silicon to seal the edges. Was caught and rode through the tropical depression that caused tons of flooding on the east coast in mid sept last year and did not have a problem with water (besides trying to find a road that was open). Here are a couple of links to some covers. Not familiar with that head unit but would think one of these would work. Have you tried to remount it to set it further into the fairing? Shot me a PM if you need more pics for some reason it will not let me upload more than one pic.

06 flstfise,

When I set it back a little the flip out lcd display doesn't open properly.

I love what you did with the inside of the fairing, I will need to look into doing something similar.

Thank you!

I would check marine supply houses and boat shops for a different waterproof faceplate with more clearance. Be careful when sealing around the amp since they create heat, I'd want it to breathe as much as possible.

I don't have any experience with aftermarket fairings, but I'm guessing if you can keep the water out of any seams, you should be good to go.

What was wrong with the duct tape? Did it get wet and the glue come off?

There is nothing wrong with duct tape and it did the job. I may do the samething again, I just need to think about the amp.

I also need to seal a small crack between the stereo and the housing. Can anyone recommend a proxy or sealant so water doesn't leak into the fairing?

Thanks
Dave

I had a Dragonfly on a Fatboy few yrs back. I made a mounting plate out of plexiglass to mount my amp and bascially close off amp/headunit to elements. Here's a link to pic.

I had my buddy make me a shelf to mount the amp (see pic), but I am not sure how to protect from water, or if I even need to worry about it.
