Hard to tell without seeing the bike, but it does sound like an improper air/fuel ratio is occurring here. Pretty probable the shop he decides to take it to will correct the air/fuel ratio by means of some sort of EFI tuner, the Power Commander is a pretty common choice (one of the better ones in our humble opinion), but just like everything else, choose the option that best suits you.
First I will say I am not a tuner or do I have any experience tuning a motorcycle but I do have a good mechanical knowlage and a good understanding of how things work and work together. With that said I am always looking to learn more.

My understanding is the tuning box takes the stock ecm siginals and changes them based on the map loaded into the tuning box.

The map in the tuning box is based on a known map in the factory ecm.

If you change the factory map or your not sure what factory ecm has loaded in it then the tuning box is making its changes using bad information unless the map in the tuner is based on the factory ecm map.

Atleast this is how my buddy's Fuel pack worked. When getting the settings, part of the required information was what the stock ecm programing was.

Does the PC V work the same way?

Please feel free to flame on..... I am always looking to learn more. Sometimes by sticking my foot in my mouth.

I use a simple rule when cruising. 1st gear to start from stop. 2nd to about 30 MPH. 3rd to about 40 MPH. 4th to about 50 MPH. 5th to about 60 to 65 unless I'm going up hill. On level ground riding solo, I can use 6th after 60 MPH. You will be ok with the Dealer DL. I ran stage 1 with Dealer DL for years on bikes. I would only buy a tuner for big bore and cams. JMO
Sage advice right there.

He knows he has Rinehart True Duals and a new set of handlebars. He thinks he has a download from a computer (his words). I would think his recourse would be to first go to who did the work and ask the right questions. If indeed he does need a tuner, then yours may be his choice, but if he bought your tuner not knowing exactly what his issue is, the tuner may not resolve his issue, at which point it would be fair for him to express his dissatisfaction in your product, fairly so, even though we all know a Power Commander is a great product. Too many times I see guys on here touting the tuner as a "cure all", but there are many times they may not even be needed. The best thing you can do for your customers is to not "upsell", be honest, tell them what they need to know, let them make an informed decision even if means losing a sale once in a while, your honesty and candor will keep them coming back, buying more and recommending you to others. Just my , but what do I know, I'm just an old fart that loves riding Harleys.
Well said! This is presicely what Fuel Moto does...and a big reason why they are so successful. Jaime never touts other products...just provides tentative solutions...which in turn might result in a sale and new faithful customer....like me!

Okay, got to experiment a little this weekend. All RPMs are my guess. If i keep the r's below maybe 2 she never misses a beat. From 2 to 3 its rougher than a cob. And over 3 she smoothes right out. I'm thinking we missed on the mapping??

Take it back and have them correct it.

My concern is, so as I took off on my first ride I took it up to about 40 and shifted to 3rd (to lope along) and the bike had a hick up. It seems I have to run at a higher RPM or the beast falls on its face. As long as I'm accelling or decelling everything is good, although it pops like crazy on decell. It seems difficult to cruse at 30. Any thoughts?
Love the Wild 1 515's and the sound of the 4" rineharts and the added vroom of the stage one!!!

There is a ton of mis-information in this thread. To the OP...Something wrong Here! Could be an intake leak? Take it back and make them fix it...I agree on the eventual need for a tuner but your bike WILL run fine with a Stage 1 flash from the dealer if everything else is done correctly. Take it back...

After taking the bike back and having the wrench ride it, then taking it back again and having the owner ride it, they concluded this is the way it is.
I've owned quite a few bikes in my 40 plus years of riding and this bike is running lean! I like the new sound and the added pep, and breathing good just makes good sense.
Decided to go with Fuel Moto dyno-jet vision. Probably will get less mpg but hopefully I'll be able to put around again when I want, instead of riding it like I stole it, all the time.
