I just installed a SE Comp and a 68 tooth rear pulley. I noticed the difference the first time I pushed the start button.

Bstom, thanks for the advice but I don't really understand what you mean by "grooves at the hub." I'm guessing this is something that you do to a component of the SE compensator to ensure oil get somewhere important???

Careful what you ask for! Here's more than you'll ever want to know about the SE comp:
http://harleytechtalk.org/htt/index....c,46004.0.html

Unless you're in to doing free research for the MOCO, you can install the SE comp as is but may have to replace it sooner than you expect.

Just a couple months ago, I did some work on my '07 Fat Boy (103 kit, Andrews 54H cams and 30-tooth transmission sprocket). Like you, I started noticing the clunking. Some of it sounded like it was just the transmission when I would accelerate or decelerate. However, there was a new, very distinct, loud clunk occasionally coming from exactly where the stock comp is-no mistaking it.

I purchased the SE comp (the newer version with the "A" at the end of the part no.). I then began reading up on all the problems with the SE comp. So, I figured I should get as much mileage as possible out of the stock before putting the SE comp in, which is still sitting in a box in my basement.

Some people around here say they have tens of thousands of miles on the SE comp, and I have no reason to doubt them. Seems, though, that most get less that 20k before having to replace it again.

Too much monkey business and over-thinking for me. I'll just wait until the stock is truly bad before changing it out.

do the comp upgrade. if you wait to long, it will eventually wipe out the starter clutch too. just went through this back in october. i had to do both comp and starter clutch. theres an absolutely great thread about the procedures to do the comp upgrade which i used and it made EVERYTHING easier. thanks to that thread i was able to do everything without any problems

Thanks for all the help, guys. I did replace the stock compensator with the SE compensator. I went with the newest version, the "A" version, and had it installed in about 2-3 hours. The job went surprisingly well (which seems to be uncommon for me) and the first time I fired it up, I was glad I did it. BUT, the ticking was still there! So, i pulled up my pushrod covers and readjusted my pushrods which I was positive I didn't need to do--"insert an idiot sign here--whelp, that's exactly what I needed to do. The ticking went away. So, the ticking is gone and I have a new SE compensator

Either way, I'm glad I did it. It starts up so smoothly. Thanks again!
