Just picked a 2001 Road King Classic. Stock everything. Looking for ideas on some less expensive mods. Already swapped out the front and rear lenses and went with the smoked look. Chrome passenger floorboards added a nice touch too. Thoughts on chrome bolt caps, air filter covers, headlight trim... Thanks.
I hate to tell you, but I'm afraid there may be no such thing as inexpensive mods to a Harley. Even if you do get great prices on things, most of us buy enough that it becomes very expensive, at least I know I do, so I couldn't help with that part.
Congrates on your new bike, and welcome to the forum, enjoy the both of them.
Bike Nights, dealer BBQ's etc. are a good way to see what owners have done to their ride and figure out what appeals and doesn't to your eye.
Some guys try to use the road king as a basis for an old school FLH look- fishtail pipes, wide white walls, fringe, chrome 80 spokes wheels etc., others have a completely different idea
It can be way easy to get spendy with chrome doodads and add ons.
here's a quick one; I use the chrome allen head covers, really helps on wash day and keeps the crud from collecting in the allen heads.
it'll cost you about $80 to get all the bolt heads on your bike
alot of the riders here are not so keen on the frenched headlight trim- it tends to have an unsightly gap at the joint- if it had been designed with a locator tab it would have been a better product, but it's a butt joint that doesn't always close up or line up
First thing - A better air cleaner. Harley, K&N, etc. are all MUCH better than stock.
Second thing - Slip-on exhausts.
More air in, more air out. Your bike will thank you every time you ride it.
As other have said.. check out other bikes & see what catches your mind lol...... And be prepared for that look .. you know... the one your wife gives you after you spend hours cleaning and polishing your bike
My most inexpensive mod was to cover the stock ugly galvanized shifter linkage. Went to the Home Depot and bought a piece of chrome covered, brass 1/4" toilet water inlet pipe. Cut to fit between the locking bolts. Put in a dab of silicon when sliding it over the linkage rod, and eureka! instant chrome linkage. I think it cost me like $1.98.
