The G4 WERE the best quality sound when they came out but like every other tech device improvements come out quickly. Sena actually has more volume than the G4 and slightly larger speakers. If you have room in the helmet for the speakers Sena SMH10 sounds a little better than the G4. The AKE stealth 201 headset and the UClear have superior audio quality but lack a few of the G4 features. The G9 should be coming out soon but details on what changes (beyond a larger network of riders) are not yet clear.
Accepted, the Sena and Uclear weren't in my list of options, should have stated that
Here is my experiance with Sena. Works good with phone paired and as intercom. There is a software issue with Sena that they claim to have revised when you want to pair the Sena to Zumo GPS. If you have a phone paired to the Garmin, and the Sena paired to the Garmin, and the Sena paired to another Sena for intercom, it has some issues with the way it handles the bluetooth switching. Confused yet? If you do any 2 out of the 3, its great. Doesnt seem to work well when you do all 3 things.
I get the same thing with Zumo, iphone 3gs,4 & 4s and Scala G4. I've tried other phones and a freinds G4 (w/ diff software level). The only constant is the Zumo. My combo worked fine until the day I downloaded a software upgrade to the Zumo.
We have the G4 and like it a lot. We did the Snowmobile mount vs. the boom mike and it installed nicely. I like that it has online updates. Can't comment on others.
Our group use the Sena SMH10B. No complaints. True 1/2 mile range in open terrain. New firmware will allow 4 simultaneous connections. Right now it's 3. Interfaces to smartphone easily. Considering the size of the helmet speakers, the sound is great (loud). Battery life is excellent. Waterproof (I know from experience). Optional accessories. Customer support is very good. 2 year warranty. They are very receptive to customer feature suggestions. They are developing additional products.
I have the G4. Use it mostly to talk with my wife behind me. But I also have it paired to my iPhone 4S. My wifes is paired to her iPhone 4. These are mounted on ž open face helmets. The communication between us is awesome. We do get wind noise in VOX operation so we tap to talk and when done then tap to turn off communication between us. She streams music (Pandora) from her iPhone and loves it. I added a small foam pad under my speakers and aligned them with my ear canals to bring them closer to my ears and now the volume can sometimes be too loud. Keep in mind these are small speakers, so if youre looking for deep bass sound this isnt for you, but really at 70 MPH on a motorcycle what do you expect? I can receive phone calls and the person on the other end never believes Im riding. Its that clear. It is capable of placing voice activated calls and launching play lists but with a V&H head-pipe and slip-ons its just too loud for Siri to understand what Im saying when riding down the road. But in all honesty Siri doesnt always understand me while in my F150 driving down the highway. We ride 5 plus hours and never run out of battery. It can be charged from a USB connection to a PC or the small AC charger. The firmware is also upgradeable via the manufacturers website. Ive updated it twice. New features were added and user controls were improved. Nothing we use. So, for helmet to helmet communication, streaming music from an iPhone that isnt going to bump you off your seat, receiving phone calls, and streaming GPS directions from my iPhone it works great. I cant compare it to anything else because I didnt try anything else.
I've been using my new Sena SMH10 for about 2 weeks now and couldn't be happier. Sound is great, and my wife says she can't even tell I'm on the bike when making/answering calls. Would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested.
audio recordings through the Bluetooth intercoms at speed
After seeing (subscribing) to a half dozen of these threads we decided to take be proactive and let you all be the judge. Check out this video and tell us if you find it useful. We plan on doing one with the Sena SMH10, Scala G4 and then UClear 200 when it is available. You can subscribe or leave comments on Youtube or message us on here if you want us to demo different conditions etc.
We have a set of Scala Rider Q2 Multiset Pro and they work as advertised. In a matter of fact I just recieved the Scal Rider Audio & Microphone Kit for half-helmets today.
Did some research as well before purchasing the Sena SMH10b units in December. Bluetooth from the iphone to headset is great. I play music from my iphone via bluetooth. My passenger can have their own phone paired to her headset and listen to her tunes. With tap of button, music mutes/pauses and connects to passenger for conversation. When done another tap from either headset and we are right back to our music. Can also hard wire anything with a standard earphone jack to the headset via supplied cords.
I have modular ff and mic fits easily between helmet and face. Passenger has a 3/4 with shield. Convresations are crystal clear. Music is ok, never going to match a good pair of earphones. Phone calls are clear and as others have said the callers are stunned they can not hear my bike or wind noise.
I went with Sena because of their reputation in communication equipment and the firmware is upgradeable. Only been using a few months but so far very pleased with purchase.
