They don't work if you buy it for yourself. It should be received as a gift. Go to the following thread so you can send your bell to someone else and receive one in return.

They have an expiration date which is apparently quite variable...

if you install a bell you will never know how many crashes you have prevented. if you do not install a bell you will never know how many crashes you could have prevented. so the answer is a resounding maybe.

Gremlins and evil spirits are cute tales to be told for amusement, nothing more.
For anyone interested here is the reason I have bells on my bike, both given by dear friends.

Polishing the guardian bell
It has been a tradition among some of us for a long time to attach a brass bell to our left swing arm, to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone down riding.

It’s a small thing, but the reason a brass bell is chosen is that, as we ride, it gets dirty and tarnished. Every time we get down to wash and polish it, we are reminded of friends lost, and our thoughts turn to the meaning of being in the wind.

As we ride and hear the bell ring, we know that our brothers and sisters are riding with us, and how easy it would be to join them with a single mistake.

And maybe, just maybe, the next time a situation comes up; they will be there to help us...as long as we remember them by polishing the bell.

I really don't need a little bell hanging off my bike to help me remember lost friends. I think about them almost daily.

I like the tradition. I would never hang a bell on my bike that wasn't given to me by good friends. I would never LEAVE a bell on a bike I bought, because that bell means nothing. A friend of mine recently bought a bike - I was happy to provide a bell for him as a token of friendship and camaraderie.

OF COURSE it doesn't stop "gremlins"... or ghost, goblins, or zombies or vampires... that's just part of the "story".

Then you certainly don't have to have one.

For me, I've been riding for 40+ years and lost friends on bikes even as a teenager. Seeing the bell as I walk up to the bike provides a gentle reminder of those long lost friends who I may no longer think of every day. It also provides just a bit of a reminder that this can be a dangerous pastime and to do what I can to be safe.

If you don't need any of that then you are blessed.
Ride safe, bell or no.
