i also have 01 manual says service every 5000 miles using special purpuse grease part #99857-97 don.t know if you can just use mult-purpose grease.
Pump the grease till you just see it start to come out the bottom then stop pumping or youll be cleaning grease till the cows come home. By the way, if the grease has runny oil dripping from the grease gun dont use it unless you want that oil dripping from the steering head, go with a grease thats does not separate evidenced by an oily mess. Ride safe and take care...Tucci
As said before it will take quite a bit. Watch the top of the neck as well as the bottom for the grease to come out. I didn't and turned a 60 pump job into an 80, and had a mess to clean up. Also as stated before use a good quality grease or it will look like your bike has the Hershey's Squirts from the neck. I use the blue marine grade grease myself.
As stated, use a good "Tacky" high temp grease. Another tip I use is:
Take a strip of old sock and thread a 1/4" plastic stay tie through it, then wrap around the bottom of the steering neck. Tighten it up with a pair of needle nose plyers then pump away. You won't lose hardly any grease around the bottom and it'll pump up and out the top as it should. When finished, just clip the stay tie and wipe what little came out the bottom and you're good to go.

Good tip. Green Grease is supposed to be real good. (www.greengrease.net) I bought a tube the other day. You can get it anywhere.
