1.) save a little more and get a used 09 or newer from a private party.
My 09 FLHTC with abs/sec/cruise cost $15K cash 18 months ago, 5000 miles on it
2.) Montana has no sales tax on bikes. set up a Montana LLC and buy the bike there. Online LLC agencies will do the paperwork and mail you your plates for about $600.
The LLC owns the bike, you own the LLC. MT m/c plates are permanent, no yearly fee, inspection etc.
walking down to the dealer and impulse buying a full price bike is just lazy.

dont' worry about an extended warranty, most of the common mods we do violate the warranty. if buying used ask the owner how it does burn outs and wheelies--if he gets excited about that and talks about using car tires too, walk away

Patience is what you need. The seller on the 04 is not firm at his price. He just says that, so if you want it, he will go down in price. I think that if you get a new bike abs is a must.
I would keep shopping. Don't buy below 09 because of the new frame design.
But, if you are compelled to buy one of these, then it's a no-brainer....get #3.
Or you can sit at home and dream about the rest of us on our motorcycles while you lavish in the splendor of no debt. Your call. (kidding of course, but had to say it!!) Congrats on being out of debt. Not easy to get in that position these days.
One reminder....get what you want when you do pull the trigger. Life is short, go first class. Period.

...... if the real choice is btwn a 3yr old.20k/yr bike .... & a new one w/a bigger motor for $2kmore, that's a no brainer, ......the new one.

I'm in the market for a red ultra classic and have found a few to choose from.
First is a 2004 with only 13xx miles on it. The seller is firm at $12K, I don't want to pay that much and I have concerns about the seals and gaskets for sitting so long not to mention it's only a tc88.
Second is an 09 with 55xx miles, bottom line price at the dealer is $16,995. By the time I get a warranty, pay dealer fees, and tax, I'm in the neighborhood of $20,500.
Third is for $22,000 out the door, I could get a new 2012 with a 103. I could pay cash for the first but would have to finance the second and third. I'm in a great position financially for the first time in my adult life because I have no debt and would like to keep it that way.

Definitely not the 04. The 09 has more miles than I would care for but has the new frame plus many other upgrades from 04. I would go all in on the new one. Good Luck!!
I live in Jacksonville, FL where the tax rate is 6%. Price on the new one for Shriners is $19,600 which includes all the dealer fees. After tax and the color option I believe the total out the door price is $21,412. I'm putting $10K as a down payment and financing the rest (probably at a higher interest rate) since I had some discrepancies in the past on my credit report. The 09 was $16,900 before any fees, they tried talking me into a 5 year extended service plan the was $1498 and dealer fees plus tax brought it up to $20,500 after thinking about it, I think it's too much and too close to the price of a new one which I initially was avoiding. I'm not a big one on service plans but have had it save my *** a couple times from the 8 other harleys I've owned over the years. I'm interested in the 04 but again, not sure if sitting all those years are going will bring me grief in the future. I'm a rider and usually put on 12-15K per year since I would be using it as a daily commuter. I had a 2010 Ultra (in my sig) which I had some likes and dislikes about it.
I vote for the 2012. Love that red/merlot combo. Put the 12k down on it, and finance the rest. Payments would be low, and it'll keep your credit in good standing. And you'd have a new bike with warranty and no issues as with the previous bikes.
