I have heard of guys drilling out their stock mufflers, I was talking to a guy the other day, he said he did years ago and used a 1 inch hole saw..Has any body had any experience doing this, and is that hole big enough..How do you guys rate the sound..I have an 05 road king custom ..... brummie
measure theinside diameter of the pipe...hell if you don't like the sound you can buy a cheap set of stock or slip on mufflers...I dit it to my 05 Sportster and sounded great.
This is something lots of guys did in the old days. Seems most bikers are much better of financially these days. I can't remember how bid of a bit to use. Do an internet search you're bound to find some helpful info.
I drilled mine, I got the biggest hole saw that would fit in both ends of the muffler. Drilling out the cat was the hardest part but time and persistence paid off. The new sound is louder, but more of a crack than a deep mellow sound. If someone made a budget priced after market muffler, especially with adjustable baffles, styled like the Road King factory units, I'd have tried those. No one makes those and I don't much care for any of the others (just personal taste) so I'm happy with what I have.
I used a piece of scrap round bar. Grind the end flat almost con caving so the edges are sharp. Use a 2lb shop hammer and cut the plug. I really liked the sound.

Sounds like a good idea...so the round bar would be how big in diameter .....you went all the way through ..yes. Brummie
There are numerous mufflers on ebay and the forum for sale, some have the removable baffle and others require drilling or punching out. You could invest in a cheap set of mufflers and experiment before screwing up your stock pipes or should you punch out your stock mufflers, you can find replacement mufflers pretty easy..
oddly enough on my dads 10 trike he want to do this so i took the muffler off and used a 3/4 pipe coupling with a 7/8 piece all thread rod and pressed out the baffle and was surprised of the difference sounds a lot better
