You should not have to use teflon or any other tape. The threads are straight cut. The O ring does the sealing not the threads. If I were you I would just drain the oil into a clean container and then replace the O ring. Then just put the oil back in. Simple 1,2,3. No rocket science needed here.
I've used the quick thumb plug method befor, no problem, minimal loss. An extra set of hands to clean the plug and put on a new o ring wouldn't hurt. As mentioned already, this is not a thread tape/sealant application, it will seal fine on a new o ring. Definately check those trans exhaust hanger bolts before you start on the oil plug.
I always replace o rings when any drain plug is removed that has them... & no on the tape... if any of it comes lose it can clog oil passages.. if you fell like appling something use the tefflon paste..but as stated the o ring really does the sealing..
The Teflon Tape isn't gonna clog anything. Yea, maybe if you use the whole roll and stuff it inside the hole it might
Just apply a couple turns being careful to keep it on the threads. You shouldn't need the Tape, but sometimes o-rings don't seal properly, or tear, or whatever.
The Tape is good insurance, and as long as it is applied correctly, it won't hurt a thing.
