Default GPS and Bluetooth

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this or not. If it isn't I am sure the mods will move it.

I have a 2011 Road Glide Ultra and am looking to add a Zumo 660 and would like to be able to hear the MP3 and driving directions through the helmet headsets. I did a search and found something about a GPS interface and asked the parts guy at the dealership couldn't tell me for sure if I would be able to hear and talk on the cell phone with the interface only.

I know I shouldn't use the phone while riding but I have to be on call 1 out of every 3 weeks and at least I will be able to ride a little more often if I can answer a call while on the bike.

I have the roadtech 665 and NIM with my phone linked to the GPS. I can hear the caller but can talk to them. There is a company that makes an interface that allows the headphone mic to work with the GPS but right now I cannot think of them.

Or you can go with a Bluetooth headset and connect directly to the GPS. But then you would not be connected to the intercom

You will need an HD Road Tech GPS, and the NIM (Navigation Interface Module) to allow you to hear the directions through speakers and/or headsets. The NIM only works with the HD Road Tech Garmins.

To add the ability to hear MP3's from the GPS, you need to ensure that the RCA cable is plugged into the front of the radio. The RCA jack comes with the NIM, but from reading posts on here, I guess some dealers "forget" to install that part.

To be able to use your cell phone through the HD system, while it is paired with the GPS, you need to add the HD BOMM (see link below).

http://www.hdbomm.com/

It may sound complicated, but it's fairly simple once you figure out how it all works.

There are other ways to accomplish what you want to do, but to have everything go through the HD radio, you need an HD Road Tech GPS, NIM, and HD Bomm.

Good luck.........

I have a Zumo 550, and all I have to do to hear navigation directions and MP3s is to plug it into my AUX port on the radio.

BTW, I used Iron Cross Radio to add an AUX port to the back of my radio. That, coupled with the dash mount for the GPS makes a very clean install, with no wires.

With that said, I hardly ever listen to the navigation directions. The one exception would be if I'm going somewhere in a city that I've never been before. I find it frustrating that it cuts out the music 5 times to tell me to turn left on Main Street. I can see that.

I have a Roadking so none of the radio overhead. No NIM or anything involved but I still use the GPS Phone and listen to MP3's all on my Scala headsets while still being able to talk over the intercom with the better half. It uses bluetooth. Road Tech 660 GPS connects to Android phone and to my Cardio Scala G4 bluetooth headset. Then my headset and my wifes headset connect on the second bluetooth channel for intercom. I get MP3's from the GPS. It all works great and the phone if needed interupts the MP3's and the intercom interupts the MP3's and the GPS interupts all for directions.

I bought a Zumo 660 several years ago to use on my Goldwing, since I've never had much luck being able to actually hear my helmet headsets on my Harleys.

My plan was to pair it with my phone and bluetooth headset, and be able to hear mp3s from the Zumo's music player, nav directions, and phone calls while riding. The Parrot SK4000 bluetooth headset works well, and everything paired up with the Zumo fine, but the Zumo was buggy and totally unable to handle switching between the different bluetooth audio streams from its own internal music player, my smartphone, and the Zumo's navigation properly. Those functions would work OK alone, but when all of them were activated at once, volume levels would fluctuate, and sometimes music wouldn't resume after nav directions played, stuff like that. Many others voice similar problems on the Zumo forums on the net. Despite all the firmware upgrades Garmin has issued for the Zumo, AFAIK, it's bluetooth issues have never been satisfactorily resolved. The take-away from it all is just don't be surprised if you try to use the bluetooth capabilities advertised in Garmin's Zumo specs and it doesn't work well.
