Default Boom Speaker lids?

I see the lids hold a 5x7 speaker. Anyone ever drop in something other than the boom speakers? I need a 4 ohm speaker. I see Focal makes a 5x7 and am wondering if it will drop right in? Or can they easily be modified to fit a 6x9?

I have the cycle sounds ones. But I put rockford fosgates into them. I like they way they look a lot better than the harley ones. Got mine from rockheadbikes.com for $359.00 and free delivery

A couple of observations based on my experience with the HD saddlebag speaker lids, as well as those of my good friend, TIF2 (his username here).

The HD lids use a unique hole pattern. So if you use an aftermarket speakers, you'll need to drill holes in the lid or modify the frame to install.

In my case, I used Rockford Fosgate 6x8 speakers and needed a Dremel tool to narrow the frame slightly to fit, and drill two holes in the lid to mate with the HD lids. Not a problem; but, not for those who are averse to modding anything to fit.

My friend used JL 5x7's and added some to the frame using JB Stik.

On a positive note, Hybrid Audio Technologies is making a 5x7 to "drop in" to the HD lids--I plan to buy a pair; although, I finally hooked up the RF's and they sound GREAT.

If you check the HD saddlebag speakers, the 1 ohm and 2 ohm versions both use a bridge mounted tweeter; probably to prevent water incursion if the tweeter is stalk mounted as is typical with two-way speakers. The reason I chose the RF's was that the tweeter is bridge mounted. The new HAT speakers will also have a bridge mounted tweeter.

As for installing 6x9's, hope you undertake the project.

Carl

Unless you went with the cycle sounds lids and their speakers which already come with an amp just power their speakers and they fit in like a glove. And i think rockhead has them also. I believe they retail for $699 and they are selling them for $629 which include lids, speakers, and amp.

I dont have a problem modifying, but one reason I was thinking about the HD lids was they can come color matched. I dont want to do too much handling when they are already painted. Drilling a couple holes should be that big a deal. But dremeling out for a 6x9 may be. At least trying to secure it without scratching paint.
The price for those cyclesound lids is the best I have seen yet

Suggestion: Order the HD lids color-matched then wait for the HAT "drop in" speakers--they'll be available in 2 ohm and 4 ohm versions.

If you're impatient, the RF 6x8's require very little help from the Dremel to fit nicely and sound GREAT with the RF 300x4 amp.

Carl

PS: Cosmetics are very personal, but for me, the HD lids/grilles look better than J&M's and the Cycle Sound lids.

Which RF speakers did you use?

I have the HD lids, and I put Polk 5X7's in them. The holes didn't line up quite exactly, but I was able to trim my speaker tabs with a pair of tin snips, and then mounted them with some 1/4" washers to snug them down.

They sound really good, and fit well.

I used some speaker gasket material to assure a good seal w/ the RF T1682's.

Like I said previously, if I had it to do over again, I'd wait for the Hybrid Audio Technologies "drop in" speakers (even though the RF's sound GREAT)--whether they are labeled as 5x7 or 6x8's I don't know--but they'll be a high quality speaker with a bridge mounted tweeter.
