Well after a break from riding I have decided to start back up. I have located 3 bikes that I can't decide between:
1) 2009 Street Glide very customized but the current owner is way high on his price
2) 2010 Ultra Limited price is good but I don't care for the Ultra's front/rear fenders
3) 2008 Street glide very customized and very good price however the bike is across the states would have to locate a shipping company and I am not sure I could inspect the bike before buying.
I have to admit it would be nice to have the Ultra for the tour pack but a quick detach would be a must. If memory serves me correctly there was a frame change between '08 and '09, if I am correct is that a deal breaker for the '08?
not for me - I've had an 07', 09', 07', and now an 08' in that order. The 09' did handle better but if it's an issue just add a touring link to tighten it up. I've seen some really good deals on lightly used 2011's and even some 2012's - might be something to think about as well. Good luck in your search but the main thing is you'll be back on a Hog!
'09 is the year they changed the frame. Best to be patient if your not sure, there are plenty of bikes to choose from.
If you intend to pack on the miles or ride two-up, I think you'll be happier with the Limited. IMO, they are a more versatile bike than the SG as delivered, and they look pretty sporty with a removable tourpack kit. I like the traditional styling of the Ultra better, but if the SG is what you like, that's what you should get.
I ride an older Road King but were I in your shoes I would be all over the Ultra. Can't tell ya how many times I wished I had more storage. Just a couple weeks ago a buddy and I were out on a couple hundred mile ride and came across a large flea market. Could have had a couple great deals if I had the Tourpack. And fenders? Really????
You wouldn't buy an Ultra because of fenders!? That's crazy talk man! Get the Ultra!
I am inclined to agree. A few things attract me toward #2 choice. Mainly, it's the newest of the bunch and it is NOT heavily customized and I see that as a plus. If a fender is really a problem you can probably change it out.
I'd never buy a bike across the country that I did not have a good look at.
