I've searched and read about the pipes in my '11 Ultra (cats). I'd like to install an aftermarket ignition (Thundermax) and from what I've found, I need:
1. 2009 pipes with relocated and larger 02 sensor fittings
2. 2009 pipe has no cat.
3. 2009 Ultra pipe will fit 2011 ULtra bike.
4. From there, I have muffler options (keep stock, aftermarket, modify stock, etc.).
I found a local guy selling the complete exhaust system off his 2009 Ultra for $125.
Is this a good option, or do aftermarket pipes alone give better performance than stock pipes?
a few older threads in here were others have done the same thing, only most went with pcv no need to change bungs,or mess with wiring, aftermarkets will give a bit more performance, and ceramic coatings help with heat, but they come with a big price tag.
Yes you can. I did this mod. I purchased '09 head pipes, plugged the 02 sensor holes (because '09 are a different size and location than '11), and went with the PCV and stage 1 intake. Muffler choices are endless and subject to personal preference for sound.

Reason: typo
Got a set of Fuelmoto header pipes, has both 12 and 18mm bungs.
Used the stock mufflers for a while. Then got a Thunder-Max
Had a PCV on the last bike, didn't like it.
Mufflers are subject to what a person is lookin for.
So, I looked a the pipes, and the 02 sensor locations are in a "different" spot (the '09 pipes). I knew they'd be in a different position, but didn't know they'd be that "far" apart -looks like wiring could be a challenge.
With the fuel moto head pipe, are the larger and smaller 02 sensor locations near each other, positioned similarly to the 2011 location? If so, I can see where routing the 02 sensor wires would be easier.
RC, I just did what you are looking to do. I got new headers (I went with Bubs TDX, but any 2009 pipes will do), and the Thundermax wires are long enough to reach the bungs in the 2009 pipe position. Wiring is not a challenge, just take your time and route the wires as Thundermax suggests. It isn't even a 1 beer task.
