I'm not sure what the technical name of these are but they look like metal clip springs that go on each hinge of the saddle bags. I've broken 3 of the 4 of them by just opening and closing the lids. The only difference I notice is that they open easier and don't stay open as easily. Are these things important? And if I'm breaking them so easily you would think that HD would figure out some way to strengthen them or something.
Well you have a 2012 bike. I imagine you're still under factory warranty, correct? Just take it to the stealership and make them fix/replace it! I haven't had this problem yet. Beautiful bike by the way!
I was thinking of doing that. The first one broke just after a couple of months of picking her up. I was just wondering how critical these are and if anyone else has experienced it. I just can't imagine there's a wrong way to open up the lids that make them break.
It's not a defect, it's a "feature". It's designed to make sure you visit the HD parts counter at least three or four times a year. Those parts counter conversations usually get pretty expensive!
The only thing I can imagine that they are "important" for is if you don't keep your lids locked. If they are unlocked, and the spring is broken, the latch can vibrate enough to let the lid pop open at speed. That's what happened with mine; luckily there was not damage to anything. At ~$1 they are pretty easy to replace.
I broke 5 of those already , poor design . imagined if you bring it to the dealer each time .then you wait for 2 hrs, for 10 mns. work + gas , your time ., plus your stranded. so you go shopping for chrome parts. . so it might cause you. H D$ Each VISIT , . for a dollar spring . DIY. .

Good point. You'd think they would improve the design with all the breakage.
Maybe I'll just leave them off. I usually have my lids strapped in unless I forget.

That's what I did. They had to order them..... But I went back and let them take the time and effort to do the warranty work.
