I purchased a HD Service Manual from Cycle Manuals Inc. (cyclemanual.com) - $54.95 + $4.00 shipping. HD part manual for touring models is 99843-07 for an 07 - (on the HD web page the manual is listed for $58.00). I don't plan on any major do-it-yourself repairs - just like to see how it is put together and may help with some "small" tasks. Earlier years the last 2 numbers are the model year. So - - on page 7-30 of the manual (transmission section) it shows a baffle in the pan. It appears to separate the enginefluid from the transmission fluid. Some good pictures on page 3-13(engine section of the manual).

A friend of mine works at local dealer and he said he always puts a couple turns of teflon tape. bikes never drip.end quote. After reading this thread I think I mite just use new seal.
Well thanks everyone for the info, but as usual I was making too big a deal about doing my own oil change. It was a piece of cake but it definately took longer then I thought. I change all three cavities and save a mess of money. The tin foil shield idea was a good one , I didnt think of that before I changed the oil but it will be there the next time. As far as the sealant is concerned , I too had sealant all over the threads when I removed the plugs. My dealer claims to use thread sealer on every fluid change.
The sealant was on the plugs from the factory or the dealer(dealer did the 1K).
Why is it not a good idea?
BTW,I'm not reffering to red,blue or any Loctite that is for holding. It's the white stuff.
First off I wouldn't want to chance using any kind of loctite at all on any nut or bolt that treds into my engine. Can you imagine if it gets into the engine oil.
The service manual does not say to use any kind of loctite at all on the trany or engine drain plugs, just check o-rings and replace if need then install drain plugs and tighten to 14-21 ft-lbs. The Primary would be the same inspect drain plug for cuts or tears and replace as necessary then tighten plug to 30-60 in-lbs
You guys should really take another look at your service manual. Seems nobody is getting even close. No loctite, no tape on your crankcase or tranny - only o-rings. The primary plug gets tape, but should only be screwed in until .05" of the plug is still out. You do not want to tighten it. The service manual will be a good investment.
Don't know what service manual your looking at but mine doesn't say anything about tape on the primary plugand only screwing in.05".
Mine say's just as I stated above .
Inspect drain plug for cuts, tears or signs of deterioration. Replace as necessary. Install drain plug back into primary chaincase cover. Tighten plug to 36-60 in-lbs.

Reading the service manual would be an even better investment.
I reguards to the white liquid thread sealer, it would not hurt anything .The industrial machinery builders and hydraulic co. have been using it for years. It will mix with most oils and will not hurt anything, but that white tapestuff is a no no. it can stop up a filter or a oil passage.

Maybe thats why some dealers use it.
Although it is totally unnecessary, I see no reason why the Loctite thread sealant could not be used on the plugs(the white stuff)

I don't think it's necessary either. I've changed the oil in Harleys for 11 years and never had a leak, and I'm not diligent about changing the o-ring, either. I don't think I ever changed the o-ring in my '96 RK over 106k miles. It shouldn't fail if not pinched. That said, the derby gaskets sold by HD these days have three o-rings in the kit, so I suppose I'll start changing the o-rings more often.

Go to the How-to section and it will show you several pictures. It will pretty much tell you how to do anything you'd ever want to do to your Motorcycle.
I am a Harley tech at local dealer and some os these replies are correct and some not.As far as your drain plugs go use new O rings every time $1.50 each never over tighten follow torque spec these drain plugs and casings are easy to damage if you choose to use anything on threads use only a little of pipe sealent we use a little at shop on all bikes.As far as a drip tray for under oil filter use an old oil bottle cut properly and the spout works as a spout into drain pan.You will have trouble if you use a lift it will get in the way make a quick little "L"shapedstand with a piece of wood 2 x 8 one piece app: 2' long and another pieace about 12" long screw them togeher at one end jack up bike and lower onto wood will hold bike up and level which is where bike should be for draining fluids.
