Gas door wont close

I had 2 of these fail on me.
the dealer swapped out the first--- the second had a brass pin vibrate out, leaving me in the boonies with about 30 miles of gas in the tank.
the latch part stayed intact, but the linkage to release was NFG
After about 40 minutes I was able to work a thin piece of soda can in and release the catch.
filled up and later got a dummy latch ( any key).
buyer beware
turns out using the key doesn't really cost me a bunch of time when filling up
