rock chip !@!@#!!!!!
Well it was bound to happen, took a 120 mile ride today left with a perfect 2012 SG without a mark and came back with a fairing full of bugs and a nice (bam!) rock chip on the bottom right side front fender, a big bastard too... How? beats the hell out of me, I always ride with plenty of distance from other vehicles. Now the question is how the hell did a rock wack that part of the fender with no other damage?
It looks like the 20 bucks I paid for my vivid black touch up paint that was collecting dust in the garage has finally paid off. I put a total of three coats of vivid black at twenty minute intervals and then finished her off with one coat of clear coat. It looks pretty good considering the severity of the chip but of course I always know it's there. It's amazing how your eyes go right to the buggered paint on you own bike.....
I bought this one to ride not put in shows so it was bound to happen....rant over..I almost feel better...

I have a 2011 SG in Vivid Black and just got a small nick on the leading edge of the front fender. I dabbed some clear coat on it for the time being, until I can get some modeler's black paint on it and a clear topcoat.
I bought mine to ride, too...
As a side note, you can use compound and polish to blend the spot in with the surrounding area. You won't even notice it!

NO ! never use steel wool on paint !
that's why body men use various grades of sandpaper..
mike
I know I'm not the only one out there, I get chips on my car all the time and can care less, but the bike man that hurts. I'm sure there will be many more to come. I showed my girl and she just rolled her eyes and walked away....they just don't understand....
Hey, Mike, I used 0000 steel wool on some chrome oxidation on the side rails of my old Valkyrie Tourer. Not only did it get rid of the oxidation, but it put a beautiful shine on the chrome.
I guess it doesn't work the same on paint, huh?
Anyway, original post edified in deference to an expert!

After the first one, I don't even give a sh*t anymore...Hell...I broke the antenna off mine two days ago...I didn't even cry, I threw it on the dining room table and rode to work. As long as my scoot is mechanically safe and running tip-top, I'm good." Beauty is in the eyes of the beer holder".
You probably got it the same way I got mine.
From a car coming in the other direction.
I actually heard the rock hit my saddlebag and the only other car around was the one passing me coming the opposite way.
Like you said, you bought it to ride it.
If you ride it, it's going to get ding up.
My boss said the same thing when I dropped a $75,000 piece of equipment.
If you're going use it you will eventually break it.
