My 98 Ultra is starting hard these days and idles rough at first, but smoothes out and fires right up after is been hot. I've never had an EFI bike before and wondered if this could be an EFI issue. I put new plugs in it, but still same issues.....any help????????
Could be one or a combination of so many things. Dirty injectors, old plug wires, dirty fuel filter, or dirty air filter to start with the easiest of fixes.
Are you using a tuner eg; power commander or the likes?
This may be a longshot but it doesn't cost anything except a little bit of time and some light wrenching.
Take the heatshields of of your headpipes and examine them for cracks.
For a couple of years my 2000 Ultra (77,000 miles) didn't want to idle right (too slow) when it was cold and at times I had to help it with a little throttle to keep in running.
A few weeks ago I took it to a shop near me to have the new S/E Cam Chain Tensioners installed and the mechanic discovered that I had a crack in one of the pipes.
He said this was a common problem.
My bike now starts like it did when it was new.
The next cheapest things that you can do is to check your air cleaner and install a new set of spark plugs.
A few years back my bike started "spitting or coughing" occassionally on the freeway and I tried all of the simple, cheap measures so I took it to the dealer and they done a "flash" on the electronics and it ran fine but they didn't detect the above issue withthe cracked pipe but the bike ran fine once it warmed up.
I would take the a/c off and look in the throttle body, it s prolly all crapped up...give it a good squirt with carb cleaner (watch where that crap runs out as its bad for paint, plastic, rubber etc) after it dries give it a good spray with crc to lube it back up, when I say good spray I mean spray it until the the "crc power lube" runs out all over the place ( not only is crc a lube it also has solvents that will wash out dirt, crud etc.).......then put some sea foam in the tank and give it a good ride on the highway....
