Default removing ON/Off switch

04 Road Glide. Trying to get lower plastic cover off under speedo so I can tighten handle bars. Have the top half off but must remove on/off/lock handle in order to get cover off far enough to get to handlebar allen bolts. How do you remove the chrome switch handle that has the locking mechanism in it?
Handle bars keep moving and I really need to tighten them. Thanks, in advance. BA

whatever you do, make the tool- do not use a screwdriver or you'll be posting asking "what went wrong"

It's great to see folks try to help; but, providing wrong information may not be helpful.

The OP posted re '04 RG; the posts above deal with '06 and newer bikes which have a different lock and different procedure for removal.

Suggestion: Just because something works on '06 and newer models doesn't mean it will work on an '05 or older model.

Carl,

is this the steps for a 2005 and earlier model?

1. Turn the ignition KEY to unlock and leave the key inserted in lock assembly

2. Move ignition assembly to the "Off" position to unlock the forks. LEAVE THE KEY IN LOCK

3. Turn the Handlebars all the way to the right

4. With the ignition key still in the lock turn the LOCK ASSEMBLY to "Access"

5. Standing on the left side of the bike look at the lower left underside of the LOCK ASSEMBLY. You will see a small button in the rear left corner

6. Use a small screwdriver to depress the button and hold while pushing down on the KEY (the *KEY* not the entire ****) and turning it 60 degrees in the counter clockwise direction.

7. Lift and remove ****

8. Reverse to reinstall except there is no need to depress the button

A good day is when you learn something new.....

2. To remove the ignition switch ****, insert the Ignition
Switch key and turn to the UNLOCK position. Leaving
the key installed, rotate the **** to ACCESS. Depressing
the release button at bottom (left side) with a small
screwdriver, push key down and turn an additional 60
degrees in a counter-clockwise direction. Lift and
remove ****.

The above is from the '05 HD Service Manual. The same procedure works on the '04 EG that I have.

It's slightly different from what was posted previously by Airborne350G (e.g. no mention of turning the forks to the right--that's not required but if the bike is on the kickstand, doing so makes it a bit easier to access the release button that needs to be depressed.)

Your right Carl, my mistake I did not read the post correctly. Probably due to lack of sleep.
