We've all been there. Doesn't matter if it's a cage or bike, you've got to assume they DON"T see you. And act accordingly. Fortunately all went well. That's the good part of this story.
Sounds like he took advantage of the same "gap" in the traffic that you decided to take advantage of. Why do you blame him for that?
Based on your post, you decided not to stop in the turning lane, but rather to take advantage of a 1-block wide gap and continue with your forward motion, assuming all was clear. Usually a decent move, but as you learned, maybe just one block of space deserves a little more caution. We all learn through these traffic situations.
I've found that from time to time, other bikers are bigger **** wads than cagers when it comes to driver etiquette. Sad but true. Trust no one, no time, no where, on the road.
He either didn't see your turn signal from his position, or was thinking "common already, whaddya gonna do...go straight or turn ? **** or get off the pot fella " I wanna get in that lane too ! he has to wait for 2 lanes of traffic.
