me and the wife were out for a ride on sunday, after about an hour we pull up to a red lite and bike shut off,got it off to the side of the road and it would crank but not fire. pullled side cover off to check fuses and the (ecm power) fuse was blown ,replaced it and bike fired up but only ran on one cylinder. thought i could ride it a lil ways down the road to find some shade but made it half mile and smoke started to come out from the coil ,guess thats what it is ( part above front jug looks like the plug wires go into it) do i replace that part and be good to go or do i have other problems ? closest dealer is 2 hours away bike is 07 streetglide
To access codes
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word diag should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" (on mine the t looks more like a ╘ )with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted]) S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module) SP = speedometer T = tachometer
To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTCs the code will be displayed or the word none will appear if there are no DTCs. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
1 - Record the codes.
2 - If DTCs are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTCs again by repeating steps 1 to 3 If the code is current it will reappear.
4 Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
5 Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.
Check to see what code your bike has in memory and repost here.
you know i really didnt even think of that
you are very clever
so ya think if i replace the coil ill be in good shape ?
thanks again
kid
Don't know! I'll check my HD Electrical service manual in the morning and post back what they have to say about the P1356 and also any test information on the coil. Do you have a ohm meter to do testing?
The procedures in the manual call for special tools (a breakout box) and is quite detailed. At one step in the process they actually suggest replacing the coil with a known good one.
A new coil is around $100.00 the part number may be 31743-01
But this in no way is a suggestion that the coil is the problem just the most obvious choice given the observations you made.
well its gona rain all day today and tommorrow so im gona pull it apart.
the part that blew let out a big puff of smoke and you can see were it has a hole in the side where the smoke came out is above the front jug mounted under the gas tank,im guessing this is the coil im i right ? other ? is do i have to pull the tank to git it off ? looks kinda tight to git it out.
