Default "Rebound" Experience on Ohlins?

I'm trying to learn rebound adjustments on my 3-3s (2000 EGC, weight 144) and don't want to bother Howard with such a basic question. Rebound adjustments change how fast the shock regains its initial extended state after a bump, but I'm wondering how the adjustment affects the feel of the ride when, for example, going over the same bump with the rebound set higher or lower. Can some Ohlins users give their opinions of how their rebound adjustments affected the ride over the bump and how they found the best setting? This may be subjective. I'm not sure what change in the ride I should be looking for to find the best setting.

This may not help much but the best setting as you stated is subjective. You should just click away and try things out for yourself. Keep notes of any changes you make so you will know what you did, just in case you don't like it you will know how to undo it and then try the other direction. Too much rebound damping will have the shocks packing up and not enough will have them pogoing, I have simplified my explanation but you get the idea. Also refrain from any changes till the shocks are run in.

While working with Howard I found that changing the settings 2 clicks at a time got me to a decent point quickly. then one click either way got me to perfect. Also, I found that I needed to set the rebound stiffer than I thought to get the best ride. Howard had me start ar 14 clicks out and I seam to be riding at 8 clicks most of the time. Or softening it up to 9 clicks for long smooth highway rides. . That got me to where I love it. I am waiting to get Horwards no cartridge forks set up. I think that I can stiffen up a click or 2 once the front is a bit stiffer. That will get me to a more consistent setting.

Hope that helps a bit...

Mike, this is a case of taking your courage in both hands and starting to make adjustments! You already have enough info to go on. You could start by unscrewing the adjusters to confirm where they are, then resetting them. Chin up - best of luck!

Mike - i am on same boat. just installed my Ohlins 3-3's... and i had same question. Keep a spread sheet as another member mention does help. I can email to u sample if you send me ure email. I am looking for same answers... initial rebound was set at 14 clicks and i backed off to 9 yesterday after 500 miles. i found the ride to be softer at 9 clicks but i have hit some bumps and think i hit bottom. Will try the tie wrap method as on another thread. I have measured the distance set by Howard for the preload from the top rim of the collar that is adjusted to edge of top of shock ring.. hope it makes sense.. i measure 0.475" which is just little more than 12mm.
I havent adjusted the preload yet, i wondering if i turn the preload CW does it make ride stiffer or softer.. i would think stiffer since it will compress the spring more.. i think like above post.. but then i am sure the rebound will also need to be matched too..
we all weigh somewhat different and if the ohlins are on a SG or EG with various weight differances due to load, tourpak etc..not all seeting will be same for everyone. your looking for some examples as i am so we dont do anything wrong... just my thought...

There is no seal on the body visible, that is a dust wiper, the seal is under the dust wiper.
