Default My windshield thoughts

I see threads asking for shield advice and responses from well meaning folks that really don't address some of the issues of shield selection. I'll start out by saying I am 6'2" with a 32" inseam. This is important because that makes me sit in the saddle a lot higher than someone 6'2" with 34" inseam. Basic math although not specifically scientific would suggest that I would need a shield 2" taller than the guy the same hieght with 34" inseam. This also assumes we have the same riding posture. Next is the seat. I have 4 of which I use 2 the majority of the time. I also have and AirHawk seat cushion I use on some long trips. Because different seats sit me at different hieghts I switch shields depending on which seat I will be using, the type of riding I'll be doing and whether or not I will be using the Airhawk.

The below list shows my set up's and my opinion of their effectiveness. I ride a CVO Street Glide.

10" Clearview recurve.....C&C Solo sits me down and back 1"
Shield is just below my nose. Great combo for mid range rides and cooler weather. Also good for around town and short hops while 2up riding with HD Hammock seat. I have minor buffeting.

10" LRS Flat Top.....C&C Solo. Great combo for mid to long range rides and cooler weather. Also good for around town and up to midrange hops while 2up riding with HD Hammock seat. I have very minimal buffeting. My only complaint with this shield is it's "Top Hat" appearance

11" LRS Ultra....HD Hammock, HD stock Ultra Seats and C&C Solo with AirHawk cushion. Good long range solo and 2up cruising. I have minor buffeting

10" LRS Extreme....C&C solo. Great for around town and short to midrange hops. This shield has an effective hieght of only 8" thus it really is too short for me. What I just love about the shield is the way it looks and how it performs in the wind. All my other shields push the front end around in high winds. This shield does not...it stays about as straight as a string. Further, even though it is too short and I get a lot of wind, surprising enough I don't get as much buffeting as you would expect. I wish they made it in a taller version so I could have one for road trips.

Long, I know and I appologize but after I road yesterday in 30MPH winds with my X extreme I decided to comment on all my shields. FWIW

Thanks

Good input on windshields. I'm currently researching them for an upgrade for my '12 Road Glide Ultra. LRS posts that they are developing a new windshield for the RGU, and I'm holding off the final decision until I see what they've come up with. My two top contenders thus far are the Cee Bailey and the Windvest, both 15". I especially like that the CB is made of aircraft grade material, but have decided to hold of until new 'shield from LRS debuts.

Aircraft grade simply means polycarbonate. : ) we will be coming out with one of those as well with the new products. Don't worry, you won't have long to wait until the premiere we hope. We're testing night and day as we speak

By far the worst shields were LRS XStream & Stealth - distortion, fluttering vibration/noise. Forwarded my concerns to LRS - never got a response.
6'3" - final choice - Cee Bailey 7" light tint - $25 eBay

I have a Road King and was using a Memphis Shades OEM replacement that 19" in height.

I just purchased the 11" dark smoked windshield off an '08 CVO Road King.

I wear a full face and notice the bike handled better in the wind with the shorter shield. Yes, I do get a bit more helmet buffeting (and crap). But I like it because I get more airflow around the fullface to keep cooler.

I probably wouldn't ride with my novelty half helmet with that shield because of getting hit in the face with crap.

Just curious 131tman- you said you forwarded your concerns and never got a response? Did you try calling us? Did James or anyone help you when buying shield? and last one, how did you forward us? did you email or PM or call or what? I'm not trying to be an ***. I just want to get your problem sorted out. Had you tried the shield and immediately had these concerns, we'd have been more than happy to exchange the shield or refund your money to your satisfaction. But if you simply sent and email or PM and then never called to follow up, perhaps we didn't get the message or any number of things. If you'd like to email us or pm us, i'll be watching for it. you can also include your name and purchase date and I'll look it up right now for you and see if there is something we can do for you. I'm not intending any of this to seem rude, sorry if it does. Just trying to help figure out if there is something we can do for you...

Thats the opposite of my experience with LRS. I ordered a 12" special order Phantom for my Road Glide from James and he had to make it special for me to get a 12" shield out of their machines. The communication was great, shield arrived fast and inexpensive. I did not end up keeping it as i liked the CB TRSSC (KW Style) style shield better so I sold it. But based on service Id rate LRS 1st rate.
