Default 09 EG Starter issue

I have noticed recently that on my 09 EG Standard, the starter sometimes makes a straining and grinding noise and fails to turn over the first time I try to start it. It will start after a second attempt. This happens infrequently and usually after riding it for a while then trying to restart it after a short break (w/engine still hot). I bought the bike new and have 16k on it. Any thoughts?

Youre on the way to replacing the compensator and starter clutch. Had the same issues with mine. The compensator makes everything kick back and will take out the starter clutch. The MoCo carried over the weak comps from previous years that dont hold up too good on the larger motors. They make a stronger compensator for the CVO 110" models that you will need to replace it with. It costs more for the SE comp but its well worth it. Theres a lot of talk about the weak compensaters floating around. Do a search for it and youll find everything youl need to know

I am having the same issue with 20,000 on my 09 flhrc...I thought it might be my battery but dealer says its ok and my compression releases are good...I'll look into the compensator...Is that all that I need to replace?

I have a 09 Road King and mine was doing much of what you described. I was told the compensator was going and various other things.

But as a follower of the Kiss method (Keep It Simple Stupid) I replaced the three year old battery and all my problems were gone.

Even if a battery passes a load test it doesn't mean the battery is 100%. When you engine is turned off it almost always stops where it is coming up on a compression stroke. So, when you start it, it on a compression stroke. When the motor is hot all the clearances are tighter and the engine is at max compression so you need max amps for the starter to turn the engine over through a compression stroke.

it could be something else, but I would start with a 100% new battery.

Thanks for the feedback. My voltage regulator is reading that my battery is still strong. I do use a battery tender over the winter months while it is stored in an unheated shed, but maybe I should relplace it anyway. I'll start with that and see if that solves the problem. Take care.

in addition, if you hit the starter button and your hearing whining, that is the winding burning. stop.

good practice on a HD is to flick the starter button- this will either push the piston over TDC, or cause the compression to make it rebound ( reverse).

in either case, when the starter button is next applied, the motor can build a little momentum before the next compression stroke.

good battery and good cables with clean tight connections will cure most problems.

a weak battery ( or bad cables) can damage the starter ( like by burning the windings as above) or the solenoid switch by arcing and pitting the contacts and/or disc

while the battery tender is a handy device it is less than accurate or infalible- it'll help prolong the live of a battery.

I have rebuilt the hitachi on my 88 3 times, the 95 never ( 82K miles) and the 09 is fine.

the starter for the '53 however is giving me some trouble.

I installed a new battery and still have the slight starting problem...no grinding or anything like that...just a hard turnover on a cold engine...sometimes hot...I do have acr and just got a tune....mechanic says the acr's are working ok....
