09 EG Starter issue
But as a follower of the Kiss method (Keep It Simple Stupid) I replaced the three year old battery and all my problems were gone.
Even if a battery passes a load test it doesn't mean the battery is 100%. When you engine is turned off it almost always stops where it is coming up on a compression stroke. So, when you start it, it on a compression stroke. When the motor is hot all the clearances are tighter and the engine is at max compression so you need max amps for the starter to turn the engine over through a compression stroke.
it could be something else, but I would start with a 100% new battery.
in addition, if you hit the starter button and your hearing whining, that is the winding burning. stop.
good practice on a HD is to flick the starter button- this will either push the piston over TDC, or cause the compression to make it rebound ( reverse).
in either case, when the starter button is next applied, the motor can build a little momentum before the next compression stroke.
good battery and good cables with clean tight connections will cure most problems.
a weak battery ( or bad cables) can damage the starter ( like by burning the windings as above) or the solenoid switch by arcing and pitting the contacts and/or disc
while the battery tender is a handy device it is less than accurate or infalible- it'll help prolong the live of a battery.
I have rebuilt the hitachi on my 88 3 times, the 95 never ( 82K miles) and the 09 is fine.
the starter for the '53 however is giving me some trouble.
